You can vacuum the mattress with a vacuum cleaner, but it would be really hard to disinfect it.
A few years ago, we bought a couple of twin beds (boxspring, mattresses and frames) for $99 each, so y ou should not have to pay $600 now. They were on sale, but it just doesn't have to be that expensive.
However, if you want to go with used, you can buy a plastic mattress case pretty cheaply that fits over the whole mattress and zips shut, and then you could put a nice mattress protector or cover over that, so it would be soft. My MIL uses the plastic mattress covers for the beds in her motels, so I know they're available, but I couldn't tell you where to get one, sorry.
Bedbugs are making a comeback, but they are still pretty rare, so I wouldn't worry about it all that much. We bought an older bedroom set when our daughter was young and it came with a mattress that was kind of stained, we just put the mattress protector on it, and it was fine.

Back in college, I bought a used mattress from a hotel...those mattresses are in incredible shape because they are frequently rotated and covered for protection. It got almost 10 years of good wear out of it.
I would however, NEVER buy a used mattress from a thrift store or yard sale...because as others have mentioned, there is no way they can be disinfected plus of course there's the issue of bedbugs.
A good twin mattress is just not that expensive, and since you will be having to buy a mattress for your daughters bed eventually anyway...get a good one to start with, and then cover with a plastic fitted sheet until she outgrows her bed wetting.
I bought all my mattresses at Macy's...watch the white sales and the mattress sales because they run "50% off" sales several times a year. I paid between $200-400 for the Sealy twin mattresses in our home and they are all excellent. January is when they are usually having their white sales, so I'd be scouring the ads now.
I'd garage the queen set for now, and just buy a twin frame (about $10 used). Your daughter really doesn't need that large of a bed, plus you'll discover that the linens will be less expensive and her bedroom more spacious.

I would never ever buy someone else's used mattress. That's so disgusting!!! You never know what's in/on that mattress. Buy your daughter a medium priced new mattress & buy a rubber sheet that goes under the bottom sheet. If you can't find one, ask someone in a store's bedding department what you can use instead. Chux makes pads that can be used to keep the mattress dry as well. Many of the elderly use them because of lack of control of body functions. Thrift stores may say they disinfect used mattresses, but who really knows if they do?

Please don't buy a second-hand mattress. If there is only one bed bug egg on the mattress you can get infested and that might cost thousands to rid yourself of! It is simply not worth it. Even the best cleaning, disinfection cannot ensure that your mattress is bug-free.
For cheaper mattresses try Ikea. They have a variety of styles. I bought a "Sultan" mattress for less than $300 and it was very comfortable.

Wow I would not buy a used mattress. Keep looking at discount stores. Also if you go into a store, ask if they have mis-matched sets, where the mattress is not the same color as the box spring. They usually always have something like that at a discount. The other thing to do is look for auctions in your town or around your town. I was just at an auction two weeks ago where I live and someone bought a brand new beauty rest king size bed and box spring for $150. I did not even know about the auction until a co-worker told me about it. As for your little one, she nees to be in protection at night (diapers) so her new bedding wont get ruined. My son wets the bed and I have him in diapers at night so he wont ruin the bed and its better than waking up to wet sheets and wet pajamas.

This isn't the answer you want...but I certainly wouldn't want to buy a used mattress!!
Buy a twinsize mattress and boxspring (shouldn't cost much) and purchase a waterproof mattress pad.
If you do decide to get the second-hand bed, rent a carpet shampooer and clean it thoroughly.
(In my state, it's actually illegal to sell a used mattress...probably since people have had issues with pests, etc.)
