Can a collection agency legally do hard pulls on my credit without my permission?

Recently I notice a hard pull on my credit by a collection agency that I have never heard of and have not received any communication from what so ever. I don't know what the debt is nor do I believe I have anything that would now be in collections. Can they legally pull my report?

In a attempt to collect a debt yes they are legally allowed to pull your credit, they are looking for new addresses, phone numbers or employers so they can find you.

I suggest you request your free credit reports from annualcreditreport.com or call them toll free @ 1-877-322-8228 for all 3 free reports. If there is something you're not aware of on the reports, dispute it immediately. If it's on Trans Union, there is a reference # on the top right hand side. Call their customer service # toll free @ 1-800-916-8800, then put in the reference #, that will transfer you to a live person. On Experian, call 1-800-509-8495. There should be a refence # on that as well as Equifax @ 1-866-585-9451.

As previously mentioned, they have "permissible purpose" to pull your credit if they have a collection account for you.

Personally, I'd send them an "unknown debt/demand to validate letter" and beat them to the punch. Make them show they have a legitimate debt of yours.

I agree with the previous poster --- you may want to try to contact the collection agency to see WHY they are checking your report at all but especially with hard pulls which can efect your score!
