How would you define Biotechnology? ?

If you had to give a simple, layman's term definition. Best answer wins points!!

P.S: I don't want the actual definition of Biotechnology that can be found online. I want a "Biotechnology for Dummies" type of answer.

Update:

Good answers so far!!

Update 2:

I like both 412enV's answer and khriys answer...hmmmm

Biotechnology is technology gained as a result of biological studies. ie: If we use our understanding of Genetics (a branch of biology) to, in a laboratory, modify a pineapple plant so that it and all of it's descendants are able to survive much colder climates and temperatures than before, then the seeds of that plant are an example of Biotechnology.

it is the use of microbes to produce food and chemicals...the application of scientific and engineering principles to the processing of materials by biological agents.

For example, the use of yeasts and bacteria for leavening, brewing, fermentation and culturing yogurt. Selective breeding of plants and animals to create more productive breeds is a form of biotechnology. Also, just a few decades ago genetic engineering was discovered.

It is using the processes performed by other organisms so that it will bring benefits to humans. In other word, it is using other creatures to do work that we cannot do ourselves for us on a biochemical level.
