Why do people believe that Hollister Co./Abercrombie & Fitch is racist/a cult?

I personally think that they are not racist, because in reality, the majority of people who shop there are caucasian, and so are their employees. I do know african americans, hispanics, middle-eastern, and asians who wear these two brands. I also personally love these clothes and complete my wardrobe. Some say its overpriced, but look at Saks, and Nordstroms. People should just look at the clearance rack, I find clothes for as cheap as $10, and they last a long time. Anyone want to add reasons on why people believe its racist/ a cult (how its a cult I have no clue)

Update:

You all have very good answers, I'm really curious about this.

Some information:

I go to high school

I live near the metro-detroit area (my school is mostly like 30%middle eastern/asian, 50%african american and 20% caucasin)

We are students of low middle class to upper middle class

I should say about 60% of our students shop Abercrombie &Hollister

Thanks

ok, i don't think they are racist either BUT think of it this way, hollister and Abercombie are centered more towards the stereotyped Caucasian lifestyle BUT its just like Against all odds and stores like that are centered more for "people of color". personally, i think that people need to get over it, almost every race has a brand or store that goes for their money.

Maybe racist but also discriminatory because it's target audience are all-American white teens who come from upper- middle class families who can afford this type of clothing. Yes there are some racial minorities who come from the same backgrounds but most do not. Where do you live? What kind of school do you go to? How many non-white students go to your school/live in your neighborhood? How about the racial makeup of the staff at your school. These are very telling signs that you live in certain community.

Look at the models in their catalogs...most of the models fit these characteristics. Yes you may find the one black girl or guy but the majority are white models. Their clothes are suppose to be like beach wear...who lives at or near the beach. Typically those who live by the beach are whites because it cost more money to live in a beach community than an urban/city area where there is a higher concentration of non-whites.

I know I'm getting off point but if you want to debate this you need to look at it from a sociological perspective. Perhaps posting this in the sociology section would be most helpful. Ok I will stop for now because I could go on and on.lol

Personally I can find better looking, just the same quality, and wickedly inexpensive clothes at a department store than these stores. If you like the clothes shop there.

Nah, I don't think it's racist or anything, just that those stores aren't really my style, and its wayy expensive.

One of my friends bought like a plain purple T-shirt that cost like $50 from somewhere... I like cheaper, but still pretty clothes. =]

i dont think so they just gear their ads to their demographic like any successful business does

and i thought i remeber seeing some models that were not white before

ppl just like to complain about everything - they have nothing better to do but cry the blues about some imaginary cause or another
