What causes little ones to scream every time you leave the room?

Hello, I have a friend that has two daughters one is 3 and the other is going on 2 years of age. She tells me everytime she tries to like go to the bathroom they start screaming or just to go into the kitchen to put dishes away. I was just wondering if anyone else goes through this and might be the cause of that. I'd appreciate it! Thanks!

Update:

Thanks so much for your answers, helped me understand so much better so it is just a natural thing.

Haha, wow, she gets to go to the bathroom alone?? My kids don't ever leave me alone. If I'm busy in the kitchen, they're trying to climb up my legs. If I walk even across the room, the act like I'm abandoning them forever. It's just a normal part of being a kid. They're naturally "selfish" when it comes to Mommy.

He is attached so whenever the mother leaves its common for the baby to cry. But usually if you get the focus of why he is crying of his mind he would just act normal... Until the subject returns.
