Are we judging Bush too quickly?

Look, I didn't like Bush much myself. In this election I campaigned for Barack Obama, and I have no stake in asking this question. At the same time, however, Im not going to dignify the idiot statements from many of my fellow Americans that he is an idiot (I have met him and he seemed quite insightful). I was dissapointed with how he handled parts of the Iraq war (although Im still not convinced that going into it was the wrong thing) and I am against most of his religious stances that he has attempted to bring into government. That being said, he lead us with strength out of one of the darkest hours in American history (9/11) and did manage to prevent another attack. Im not saying that I liked the Bush presidency, or that Im not glad that we're out of it, but I think the liberal media is largely to blame for his dissaproval. When looked at in historical context, he is in no way one of our worst presidents ever. I just hope the American people are more leniant with our new president then they wree with Bush. Your thoughts?

Update:

Herb- Yeah but I guess my point is, what did we put up with? Most of his bad policies were shot down and other then the bads times during Iraq Im not sure what he did that was so wrong. Anyone who knows anything about government knows that there is very little the president can do about the economy. I agree that it seemed long, but was it really that bad?

Update 2:

The question isnt will he go down as one of the worst presidents, but SHOULD he. Once again, I know quite a bit about economics and there is only so much the president can do to control the economy. Good answers though.

Update 3:

Ms Bottem- I appreciate you answering this question, but I have to poke some holes in your theory. The 2000 election would have gone in Bush's favor even with a recount (almost all pollsters have said that). Once again, the economy is not something the president has a lot of control over. Finally, Iraq is a tricky thing. They didnt find weapons of mass destruction, but the June after they invaded Iraq (when people were starting to complain), Bill Clinton pleaded with liberals to silence and said that his administration had been lead to believe that there were weapons of mass destruction. So, if Clintons people found the same information, its hard to say that Bush invaded Iraq PREMATURELY. I dont like the way it turned out, but it definately wasnt an oil war. It became a war about rebuilding another country. Whether it is our job to do that is debatable, but it definately wasnt an oil war. Thanks again for answering I appreciate your opinions.

I find that with time, peoples' reputations do change as we look back at history with more insight and less bias. I think Bush was treated much too harshly by the media and that may have contributed to the general hatred towards him. Bush definitely made mistakes, but I believe that his actions may be appreciated more in the future. He did protect the US from another incident like 9/11, and that is to be commended. He also put an end to two regimes (Afghanistan, Iraq). Even though there were no WMDs in Iraq, that does not mean that Saddam could not have acquired them in the future, making the Middle East more dangerous than it already is.

I would agree with you that he handled 9/11 well and the invasion in Iraq is questionable. He should have gathered more information/details/evidence about his so called "weapons of mass destruction" but when we found out that there were no weapons of mass destruction he should have pulled the troops out that very second. He killed the economy with his terrible plans to fix it, he never stated if we would use ethanol or wind/electricity/sun to power cars which hurt the U.S car manufacturers. He also did not help the average person, Obama's tax plan will work Bush's did not. He probably will go down as one of the worst presidents but I do feel bad for the guy, I mean he might go down as one of the worst presidents.

I agree, he's no where near being bad let alone the worst. His heart is in the right place and what he did he did it because he believed in. He never silenced his conscience, and I do believe that history will render him one of the greatest presidents. There's a dignified countenance about him, and he's very respectful. He's a real gentleman, and I know we'll miss him. The media has done great injustice to his character. I never agreed 100% with him, but I do not think for one moment that he's evil or stupid. It took a lot of courage to go through what he has been through. I am not sure anyone would have been capable to endure as he did. He never blamed anyone for anything, he took it like a big man! May God bless him!

I have to disagree. I have been alive 27 yrs, and I have even served under Bush in Iraq. I felt so much shame when I came back home to the states to hear on the news that there were no weapons of mass destruction. I was watching the election od '00 when the votes in florida were doctored; I among everyone else am dealing with this economy, I cant even afford health care even though I am covered by Medicare; My Mother is a very successful woman who has made it from a highschool drop-out with 3 kids to a real-estate agent; she is on the verge of losing her home, and work is scarce for her. My Father who has been doing masonry and constuction for the last 30 years can hardly even find a side-job now. Our money did not need to go to that oil contest between him and his dad(G.W. Bush Sr.), I have had to watch a friend die in my arms in the battlefied in Iraq(his whole bottem half was gone) over this 'oil contest'! Yes, these past 8 yrs have tremendously affected me; as well as other countless Americans. Yes Sir, he is an IDIOT!

Source(s): Think back to the last 8 yrs.

Definitely. Let's face it...we just finished a tough 8 years with a President who was given a big bowl of lemons for a Presidency. There is absolutely NO ONE in this nation who can, right now, objectively look back on Bush's two terms and give an impartial judgment on it.

Maybe in 15 or 20 years, when Bush has slipped from active memory and we've had a couple more Presidents run their terms we'll be able to look back objectively at Bush. But right now...we can't. We can't even look back objectively on Clinton's two terms yet - still too many sore spots from his escapades.

Bush had decisions to make that would have made him look bad either way. If he truly thought his intelligence was true for the iraq war , and waited or didn't go, and it turned out they had nuclear weapons i cant even imagine how much heat he would of taken. Also recessions also happen periodically, was some of it the government fault? probably, and the banks yea? But the american people shouldn't of gone out and got 10 credit cards and ran up 20,000$ worth of debt. Also buying houses people couldn't afford. I do agree he made the U.S image worse. He had his bright spots and dark spots

To answer your first question, no. We had to put up with 8 years of bad decisions and disasterous policies from Bush and the results are clear.

However, we should not be more lenient with Obama. We voted for him because we felt he was the better man for the job. He talked the talk and now he has to walk the walk. Otherwise, in 4 years, my vote will go to his opponent.

  • Nice to see you are a Dem but not an idiot loon. Wish the other liberals on here were the same.
