Atheists, Please Answer: Atheist "Religion?" ?
I've been seeing a LOT of people calling Atheism a religion.
According to many people I know who call themselves Atheists it seems to be actually the LACK of a religion.
Ok.. so.. what's up? Religion? No?
I'm asking because I want to know.
I'll leave it up to the community to choose the best answer to this one!
Thanks to all of you for answering!

It's not a religion. It's a lack of belief.
Certain evangelical Christians like to refer to it as a religion in order to attack it (though the irony is lost on them), but their claims hold no substance.
Atheism has no churches, no traditions, no rituals, no prayers, no leaders, no dogma, and no organization or hierarchy. Although some atheists may get together for discussion or social functions, and many atheists often agree on certain subjects and opinions, those facts alone does not make a religion, or else every high school clique would also have to be considered a religion, as well.

The spectrum is something like this. An atheist believes there is no god An agnostic believes that it is impossible to know A deist believes there is a god but no one has direct knowledge of him There is common ground between the three in that we all acknowledge there is absolutely no hard evidence of a god I am an atheist. I take the lack of evidence to indicate that there isn't a god. An agnostic takes it to mean that it is impossible to know. A deist looks at the universe and says that its existence implies a god, but since there is no direct evidence that god probably isn't directly involved with our lives and certainly doesn't care rather we believe in him or not. As an atheist I find all three to be rational, though I disagree with the deists. The agnostic and me have a lot of common ground I just find the one possibility to be far more likely and the second to be very unlikely. I never say anything 100% though. I do not find most other beliefs to be rational. Without any hard evidence, you are just making it up if you think you have direct knowledge of god. I really have a tough time seeing how you can rationally justify it in your own head. I do see why they would want to believe it because of the fear of dieing, but it is just that. You want to believe it so you have "faith" that it is true. Wanting something never makes it true no matter how many want it that way.

no no no, thts all i have to say as a pagan atheist
i have a view, that a god does not exist, its a view, an opinion, a thought, not a religion
simply because its a thought ON a religious issue, for some reason, religious people then presume to jump on it and say its an atheist religion, probable because they cant understand how or why anyone could live withough a religious rule or doctrine

Not believing in gods is no more a religion than is not believing in leprechauns, unicorns, werewolves, Thor, Zeus, ghosts, etc. For reasons I have yet to figure out it gives some believers (usually Christians) great pleasure to "accuse" atheism of being a religion. I'm not sure what they get out of that, I doubt they know either. But, no, it is not a religion. Yes, we can be passionate about our position, but passion does not equate religion. I'm pretty passionate about protecting my friends and family, but no one claims that is a religion!

It is not a religion. Nor is it a philosophy. No two atheists have identical beliefs except for NOT believing in god. Atheism is just a word. It's what we call those who do not believe in a supreme being.

I don't think it's a religion. Some people (mostly fundies) insist on calling it a religion. In the end, atheism is what it is. I'm done stressing about who calls it religion and who doesn't.

Atheism is neither a religion nor the lack of religion. Atheism is the lack of belief in god(s) and that is it.
