How can you keep your dog calm while grooming?

I have a shih-tzu that is 7 months old and her hair is getting a little long. Rather than take her to the groomer, I thought I could do it myself with a little electric clipper. I bought a nice little Remington with a vacuum feature, but she's terrified of the thing. I have one leg too short (1/4 inch too long) and the other is about 3 inches and there's no way this dog is going to allow me to get her even. I wonder if there's a secret to this. I can't really afford a groomer once a month or so, but if that's what it takes....

Anyone out there successfully get your dog over an incredible fear of an electric grooming shear? And what can I do to help my dog overcome the fear.

Thanks in advance.

Update:

These are dog clippers. I bought them specifically for this purpose, just tonight.

Update 2:

To little Aussie down there - You are mean spirited and I'm thankful I don't know you personally. Just so you know, I'm an RN with 5 years in the OR so I know what all those things are. My avatar means nothing more to me than a twist of who I am daily. I can afford a groomer, I just have a kid I'm sending to Germany in a couple of weeks, another kid who is going on an extensive trip and I thought I could do a little trim on her since she managed to get into my daughter's silly putty and it matted her hair this afternoon.

To the others of you who offered serious advice, I thank you.

The only thing I can think of is to introduce her to the clippers with treats (so she associates it with something good) give her time to get used to it. When she seems to be comfortable with it you can start grooming her. And if you give her treats when you take the clippers out, she will eventually look forward to it.

My dog used to be scared of taking baths. I tried the treat thing and now she LOVES taking baths. I'm not lying!!!

    Good luck!! :o)

Do you know what a hemostat is? How about styptic powder? Does #7 blade mean anything to you?

Trimming is not a difficult thing to learn, BUT you do have to make an effort to find out all you can. Your "little remington" clipper is not going to be adequate for your grooming needs. There is a lot of things that you really need to learn how to do...

As for your dog's fear, practice makes perfect. When I groom my dogs, I *insist* that they behave. They do not get down until I am done with their grooming. The worst thing you can do is let your dog get away with acting naughty...she will only learn that if she acts bad sooner, then you will go a way sooner. Just have at it, no matter how bad she acts.

BTW, why on earth would you buy a shih tzu if you cannot afford the grooming? SURELY you had to know that extensive grooming is required for these dogs...

First you cannot use ppl clippers on dogs. They are not strong enough to handle clipping a dog. Please take your dog to a professional. This time is crucial in getting your dog properly used to grooming & will effect the rest of his grooming life. There is a lot more to grooming besides clipping that unless you are trained or have a good knowledge about dogs & their coats- do not attempt on your own! You can ask the groomer for advice & tips when you take your dog to on ways to extend the appts or learn on your own in the meanwhile.

Many dogs are like this with the owners, because you are letting her get away with it. Take her to a groomer. We know how to handle her to keep her calm and not stressed. add: Wow aren't you a nice person, don't ask the question if you don't want to know the answers. LOL What kind of competition, couldn't be obedience, couldn't be conformation or you wouldn't be having these behavior problems.

It sounds bad...but, Hold her and make her realize that you're the boss and you're not going to let anything happen to her

BUT..groomers aren't that expensive like $20-25 you only need to take them every 2 or 3 months.

I trim my Shih-Tzus paws, face and butt in-between visits.

Yes. It took awhile. For the first week or so I just turned it on around him so he could get the feel for it. Then I started doing little sports. Eventually he tolerated it, never liked it.

Slip 1/4 valium in her Alpo, give a good massage, and I'm sure she'll be a good little puppy.

No, no, no, I'm just kidding. I have no idea, but good luck.

Try a favorite toy, or a treat, or even try scratching/rubbing him/her in spots they like.
