Even though Gen. Colin Powell said that he didn't have the passion to run for president....?

Do you think he would have gotten elected even though he didn't have the passion to run whether or not that issue would or would not have come up during his run for office if it had materialized?

I would certainly have voted for him, btw but do agree with him that even if he had run and may have gotten elected, if he didn't have the passion for the job, he wouldn't have made a good president? I think he's right. What do you all think?

Sadly, Gen Powell lost a LOT of support among the military, along with a great deal of respect, when he took a soft line in the war on terror . This all started in the Gulf War, when the bulk of military personnel sided with Gen Norman Schwarzkopf 's hard line approach, as opposed to the more liberal views of Gen Powell. He would not have been elected had he run for President, I do not believe. I also do not believe he would have made a good president. The cold fact of it is that we live in a hard, cruel world infested with over-zealous religious fanatics who want to kill us. To deal with that, you need an equally tough President, and Powell was not it. For that matter, neither is Obama, and we will pay for the mistake of electing him dearly I fear.

Unfortunately I think Powell's association with Bush during his stint as Secretary of State would have been a heavy anchor. In particular the bit where he went before the UN and held up photographs supposedly of Saddam's mobile WMD trailers - which of course later turned out to be nothing at all. That is one of the defining blunders in the run-up to the war.

But other than that I think he might have well convinced enough people to vote for him - particularly if he actually ran as an Independent or possibly a Democrat.

The wonderful General Powell, I am sure thought he would not win so he didn't want to spend his nest egg on the campaign. I would most surely have voted for this man. If he did not have a passion for the job I think he was right to not run, if he did have that passion he would make a very good president.

I had a lot of respect for Colin Powell until:

I heard him speak at a business seminar. He talked about nothing but racial issues.

He supported Barack Obama with very a sparse and unclear explanation as to why.

I don't think that he would have made a good president. He's indecisive and less objective than he appears.

Source(s): Although our opinions may differ, this is my two cents.

His wife like most black women seems to run the house and she told him no, not over her dead body could he run for president.

Powell went from hero to zero with too many people when he dumped the Republican party to back Obama simply because of skin color and he timed it to do the most damage possible to McCain's campaign.

I agree I would have voted for him, or Michael Steele, maybe Steele will run in 2012, if he does, he will win over any Democrat

Yes I would have voted for him and yes I think he would have won in a heartbeat. His biggest reason for not running was his wife. She did not want him to.

At one time I held him in high regard, but I would not vote for him now.
