How can I stop my cat from weeing on the floor?

My kitten is 4 and a half months old. I moved house 6 weeks ago and she seemed to settle in really well, and she started using her litter tray without any problems at all. About 2 weeks ago, I came home from work and she had weed just inside my front door (about 3 feet away from where the litter tray is). The floor is tiled. She had also gone in the litter tray as well (I had cleaned it that morning). I cleaned it up and mopped the floor and everything was fine until a couple of days later, when I woke up in the morning and she had gone in the same place in the middle of the night (again, the litter tray was clean before I went to bed). This time I used bleach to clean the floor, and again it was fine for a couple of days. Then one morning she did it while I was in the shower. I bought a bottle of spray from my local pet shop last weekend which is supposed to neutralise the odour, I sprayed it on the floor and left it to dry as instructed and she has not weed on the floor since then, up until tonight. I got home from work and she hadn't been on the floor, I went to cook my tea, took it in my lounge to eat it and when I went to take my plate to the kitchen and I caught her doing it again. I picked her up and tapped her nose, told her 'No' and took her straight to the litter tray, then cleaned and sprayed the floor again. Then about half an hour ago she came into the lounge, started sniffing around and then crouched down ready to wee on the carpet (she has never weed in the lounge before). I shouted 'No' and she ran straight to the litter tray and finished weeing in there. She has never done a poo anywhere other that the litter tray. I am at my wits end and I don't know what else to try, does anyone have any suggestions?

Update:

Hi cobweb - I have used the same litter since I have had her (8 weeks), she has not had any problems with it before but I might try changing it to see if that helps :-) I don't use bleach to clean the tray, I use a spray called 'Clean and Safe' from the pet shop.

Everything I have explained above happened over 2 weeks, I don't really know how often cats are supposed to wee, I would say she probably goes 5/6 times in a 24hr period, is this a lot?

Update 2:

mtwaites - I will definitely try giving her treats when she does use her litter tray, hopefully she will learn that litter tray = delicious treats!

Update 3:

Squirrel - erm, sorry?

Firstly have you changed the litter type - or considered changing the litter type. There may be something about the current litter in the box that she does not like the feel of. Cats are very sensitive to what is under their paws or what the litter smells like.

Secondly I think she understands what the litter box is for, but doesn't like it for some reason. Are you using something strong smelling (like bleach) when you clean the litter box? This could put her off. Also once there is poo in there, they won't use it. Another thing could be where the litter box is. If she feels too exposed in any way - like by a door, this can put them off the box when they have used it before without problems.

The last thing is that she seems to be weeing a lot from your description or maybe it sounds that way. She could have an infection, this makes them wee constantly and they cannot help it. If that is the case then I'm afraid you need antibiotics from the vet.

hi, There's 2 possibilites that the cats may be weeing everywhere. i think it might be to do with territories or never been told where to wee. Your eldest cat used to wee everywhere because he may of felt threatned by the new cat and thought he was going to take over the house ranking with cats. The youngest one may still do it because he doesn't feel comfortable and is threatned by the older cat. I have 2 cats and one sometimes sprays on walls and stuff when there is change or if he wants to go outside and we won't let him. The cat litter trays don't tend to smell much as long as u clean in regularly. We have 2 trays in the laundry and it rarely smells. It could also be because your cats or the youngest one especially never got taught where to wee. He doesn't know he's doing wrong because he's never been taught anything else. Try talking to your parents about getting the cat toilet trained and getting a litter tray. The youngest cat may catch on quite quickly but the eldest one will take a bit longer. Just persiste with training and soon u will have a wee free house :) hope this helps.

You could try encouraging her by treats and other positive reinforcers. For instance, if she goes in her litter box, then you will give her a kitten treat for instance. There is some spray from the pet store that you can get that make it smell like other cats have been there, so they will not mark their spot there. You should try laying this down, to see if that will work.

Well it's a kitten so it needs more time to get used to the litter box. Make sure the litter box is clean. Also don't know where you live but Petco and Petsmart has a product that is supposed to attract cats to the litter box. We used it and it worked pretty well.

She might have a urinary tract infection. That can cause them to not want to use the litter box. Take her, or a urine sample, to the vet and have them test it.
