Remington 597 SS as first firearm?

hello

I will soon be of legal age to purchase a rifle in CA.

I figure, that everyone has a .22lr, and in my experience, they are fun/simple/cheap to shoot; they teach the practice of firing a more powerful weapon.

Anyway, I was considering the Remington Model 597 Stainless Steel Autoloader for my first rifle.

WHat are your opinions of this rifle?

Would another rifle be better in some way?

Another caliber? I don't know... .223, mebbe? Or not worth the extra money?

Update:

ya, the reasons I like the 597 SS are:

-weather resistance

-removal 10rd box mags...i dislike tubes

-it comes with both iron sights, and a dovetail mount, and is drilled/tapped for weaver rails/scope mounts

The Remington 597 SS is a great rifle. I own one of them as well as a Ruger 10/22 SS. I really like both of them

Of the two I like the Ruger 10/22 better because it has so much more accessories available. You can do so much more with a 10/22.

Either one of them are great rifles and you can't go wrong with any one you choose.

As far as other calibers go, take your time. Every gun owner needs a good .22lr rifle. Buy one and enjoy it. It will become a trusted friend for many years to come.

I assure you that you will buy many, many more rifles in your life. I have been shooting, collecting, hunting, restoring, making and enjoying rifles for over 20 years now.

    I hope this information helps.

The Remington 597 is a FINE choice for a first rifle. It will last you for several years and many many rounds of fun. A bolt action would be more conducive to the mechanics of larger hunting rifles, but you can get a light centerfire after you are familiar with the 597 and want to move on to something larger. 22LR is by far the most economical to shoot and is accurate out to 100 yards (in low winds). Get used to shooting with iron sights first and then scope it out. Also, in regards to the 597, if you have the extra $$$ for the heavy barrel, get it....you will thank me later.

When you want to step up to something a little bigger, get a 22 WMR or a .17 HMR...hot little round, still economical and can help teach you the mechanics of a bolt action (Savage makes a great 22 Mag).

Seabiscuit, a .22 LR is a great first firearm. I've had a great variety of them over the years. One of my favorites is my Thompson/Center Classic .22. It is amazingly accurate (I've never shot it against a 597, so cannot say which is more accurate), extremely reliable (ammo is more frequently a cause of problems than most rifle designs), and a delight to shoot. It's probably a little more money than the 597 SS, but not a lot.

While you will undoubtedly want to put a scope sight on it, I would suggest that you learn to shoot it with iron sights, first. Scopes get damaged or otherwise put out of commission, so it's nice to know how to use iron sights in a pinch. I even have the scope on my 30/06 deer rifle mounted on pivot mounts, so I can swing it out of the way in less than a second, if necessary.

Good luck, and good shooting! Stay safe!

Generally, if this is your first firearm or experience with shooting, the common wisdom is to buy a single shot bolt action.

If you have some experience with firearms and have ability to aim and fire without flinching, I would highly recommend a Henry Rifle. I have a 22 mag Henry which is a beautiful rifle. That is a lever action which takes about 13 in the tube magazine, it will take more in 22lr.

If you are hunting prairie dogs or rabbits, get the 22 mag, it you are just target shooting or plinking, the 22lr is fine. Ammo is cheaper for the 22lr.

Try to buy it from a private party so there's no paper trail. At this time you don't want to buy anything with a paper trail.

The Henry is a fine rifle, and they will fix anything which goes wrong with it for free, for lifetime.

Stay away from the Golden Boy or SS, too much glare, get regular blued steel.

Winchester and Steven made a great little pump 22, years ago you might be able to pick one up at at gun show for less money than a Henry. But you will never regret the Henry.

I have had mine for 3 years, put a peep sight on it and have shot rabbits at 125 yards and slain many prairie dogs.
