Classical Piano Concertos?

I've been trying to find some Piano concertos, but I'm having trouble doing so. Right now, My favorite Concerto's are The Rach 3, Tchaikovsky's Piano concerto No.1 in B Flat minor, and Liszt's Piano concerto No.1 - Allegro maestoso - Tempo Guisto.

I like powerful, angry sounding songs ;]

any recommendations for Classical Piano concertos?

thanks ;]

Haha, you just named three of my favorite concertos. Here are some other ones you might enjoy:

My absolute favorite piano concerto in all of music is Beethoven's fifth piano concerto(also known as the "Emperor concerto.") It is absolute classic Beethoven, on the level of his greatest symphonies. The first movement is in a heroic Eb major. This movement is so perfectly written. All the melodies and different sections tie into each other so perfectly, it's just great. The second movement is one of my favorite Beethoven slow movements, enough said. The third movement reprises the Eb major heroic sound, but in a lot more of a dancelike rhyhtm. Also, take note of the transition between the second and third movements. The bassoons shift down a half step from B to Bb and quietly we hear Eb major again. The piano begins arpeggiating in a quasi-improvisatory manner, and then explodes right into the third movement! It's very exciting.

Ravel's piano concerto in G major is great. It is heavily influenced by jazz. It's totally unlike any piano concerto you've ever heard. The first movement has some very sweet-sounding jazzy melodies. The second movement is also absolutely gorgeous.

Lastly, I think any list of piano concertos is incomplete without mention of Rachmaninoff's C minor piano concerto, which is no. 2. If you liked the third, you will love the second. The first movement is intense, melodic, Russian-sounding, florid, very Rachmaninoff. The second movement is just gorgeous. The third movement is very exciting, and especially at the end - the climax of this movement is absolutely amazing.

A few other works I like in particular that you might enjoy: Grieg's A minor, Prokofiev's second, Ravel's d minor(for the left hand), Beethovens Third and Fourth, Barber's piano concerto, Shostakovich's second. And if you enjoy listening to modern music, check out Schoenberg's piano concerto.

I hope you enjoy those pieces. Come back if you have any more questions about classical music!

Ditto on the Prokofiev... especially check out his Piano Concerto No. 2... also, look into Brahms' Piano Concertos, the Liszt Piano Concerto No. 2, and Gershwin's "Concerto in F" [especially the last movement, if you like furious]. If you can track down Bernard Hermann's "Concerto Macabre "from the movie, "Hangover Square"... it's pretty furious. It's on iTunes at this link .http://itunes.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/...

I love Prokofiev's piano concertos, some parts are angry, but he also goes into this world not again reached until Pink Floyd. His use of the piano with orchestra is the most intelligent I've ever heard.

As for powerful, angry? Sounds like Brahms #1 to me, in d minor.

Try Liszt's "Totentanz" it's as much a concerto as his concertos, just more powerful and satanically angry. I mean it opens with s a stomping diminished chord, then goes into a fantasy on the a theme from the Catholic Requiem Mass, (yes the same theme as in Berlioz's Witches Sabbath).

St Saens has a concerto in G minor that he tossed off, it has it's angry moments.

    I'm sure you've heard Rach 2 then if not that's a must since you like Rachman's 3rd.

I like the first movement of Chopin's 1st piano concerto. It's 20 min long lol.

I love Beethoven's exhilarating emperor concerto, particularly the triumphant last movement.

Look into Liszt's totentantz! In fact I'll just link you it's very dark, scary, and angry. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nqCEhmqsSnY

There are so many more but this shall suffice for now.

  • The best ones...

Prokofiev: Piano Concerto no. 3 in C major

Brahms: Piano Concerto no. 1 in D minor

    Also...

Rachmaninov: Piano Concerto no. 1 in F-sharp minor (the first movement is pretty agitated)

Saint-Saens: Piano Concerto no. 2 in G minor (especially the 3rd movement)

Saint-Saens: Piano Concerto no. 4 in C minor (the scherzo movement,

    or second movement)

But the best concerto with the angriest agitation takes the rest of them down....Richard Adinsell's "Warsaw Concerto".

well my favorite concerto is the same Tchaikovsky as you. I know it isn't piano, but i do also love Vivaldi's Four Seasons- Winter. It's powerful at first then slows down and at the very end it gains momentum again. It's very beautiful.

also you might like The Piano Concerto in A minor by Edvard Grieg

I would suggest you search the internet for various orchestras in all major cities and look at their schedules. Email them if you have to and ask if/when they will perform this piece. You have great taste in music. I love the 2nd. Do you also love the 3rd? I would have to say that is my favourite piano concerto of any composer that comes after Beethoven. Good luck.

Angry sounding? Uhm. That is personal thing if you "think" they sound angry. I try not to romanticize music like that. Any Piano Concerto by any of the masters is worth listening to.

Like the previous contributor, I would recommend Prokofiev's piano concertos but you might also consider those of Bartok. He often includes arrangements of fiery Hungarian folk dances in his works. Powerful stuff!
