Why do people look down on cartoons and comics?
As a fan of both parties, I want to know why. Personally, the things that I read and sometimes watch are definitely not for kids. Sure, lots of people make the common exception for Simpsons and Family Guy, which I do like a lot, but come on, you seriously believe that animated shows are kiddy? Try watching The Boondocks, Aqua Teen Hunger Force, Harvey Birdman (Love watching that to see old Hanna-Barbera cartoons in a different light), Venture Brothers, etc. Of course, I did watch Simpsons when I was a kid and was kind of aware that it was it wasn't really much of a family show to some degree, but I still loved it.
As for comics, I would suggest that people read stuff from DC's Vertigo imprint like 100 Bullets, The Invisibles, Preacher, Demo, etc. as well as Marvel's MAX imprint. Besides, I know that The Punisher is definitely not kid-friendly.
So is the reason some people seem to look down on both parties is because they believe that if it's drawn out, it's for kids? I even heard that some people look at comics as the same as reading a picture book, but I beg to differ.
Some people don't seem to realize that not all comics are superhero fare. I don't mind reading ones with superheroes, but I usually prefer ones that don't have to do with superheroes, save for Batman and Punisher.

Here is the exact reason and it has 2 parts. 1. The people who look down on them are usually stupid and can't comprehend the plot or story and are therefore too attached to the boring monotony of everyday life meaning they will only watch shows with live actors and boring plots and read books without anysort of compelling visuals. 2. The "loser", "geek", whatever you call them make comics, cartoons and the rest of us who like such things look bad because they usually have no goals, are weak, have low self-esteem, are stupid, immature, etc, meaning they have virtually no life and other people associate comics and cartoons with such people stereotypically. I on the other hand am the complete opposite of such human filth on both sides of the spectrum meaning I have a life, goals, confidence, etc basically everything you wouldn't associate with a loser and on the other hand I love cartoons and comics and hate the people who say its kid stuff, you know what I mean those boring stupid everday people who in reality like the loser have no life. I can't stand it when someone I know says this and I have heard it a thousand times "I can't believe your one of those cartoon or comics people" or "I would have never guessed your in to that stuff" I cannot stand hearing that idiotic nonsense, and I know many of you feel the same and are not the stereotypical "loser". Sunni's answer is somewhat how I feel in that the loser and the "mature" wannabe are actually both immature and create the whole problem.

Because it's a non-productive activity and the older you get the more concern and focus is expected from you on your future and your own well being. So if what you're doing doesn't seem to have any real benefits, unless you're independently wealthy people expect you to use your hours wisely. Same reason a lot of people grow beyond having certain friends or celebrating their birth month with extravagant parties. I think part of what fuels childlike imagination too is ignorance about the world. It's easy to fill in gaps with nonsense when you don't have a great concept of what the real world is like.
The reality of death doesn't TRULY hit until about your thirties because it's at that point you can feel the world labeling you as an adult. You can go through your twenties "finding yourself", and experimenting with sex and drugs and most people will sort of roll their eyes and figure you'll learn. In your thirties, hopefully, you begin to develop a concept of lost time because life is more than likely more than a third of the way over for you. You've also probably aged enough to see old friends either become mega successes or absolute failures in the game of life, and probably have a better idea as to why. Your college roommate's binge drinking seemed funny at 21, but now at 31 he's having medical problems.
Comics have a similar issue. Namely, yes, it's okay to have a leisure activity, but even that should probably be a productive one, or something that you can eventually spin into a job of some sort. If you read a book, maybe it ought to be a smart book, with quality ideas. Movies, comics, cartoons and even most TV shows are consumed by an under 30 age demographic. The world of entertainment stops pandering to people between 30-50. Their next target is retired seniors because they watch a lot of television.

I know where your coming from that's why I hide the fact that I read comics and watch cartoons. But maybe people think that cartoons are only for immature people and I bet the same people that think that probably have never read or seen a really good and mature cartoon not like naruto or something

Most people think that cartoons and comics are childish and pure entertainment.
The older generation of people look down on cartoons and comics because it ruins the minds of children. Children have always gotten bad ideas and fantasies.
But, as for that, I dont' give a darn what they think. I like comics and cartoons. It hasn't stopped me from reading and watching whatever I want.
Just do what you love.

I think the view point is that it's not productive.
If you spend all of your spare time reading about people with superpowers vs someone spending the same time studying something that can be used in real life then the comics set you back a little.
But that can be said about a lot more then cartoons and comics. Both of which I enjoy but haven't had time to.

This is how I see it:
Adults, when growing up, were also into cartoons and comics. Back then, the content was not as bad as the content of those around today. Well, at least the humor wasn't as straightforward like in Family Guy, South Park and other shows like such.
Adults do not want to see their kids being brainwashed by shows like these. They fear that it will put negative thoughts in their mind and have them act differently because of it. They would prefer it if their child would read a nice book or watch another show, that seems less inappropriate. The problem is, everything and anything can put false ideas into one's brain. I doubt that watching a non-cartoon, such as CSI or Lost or 24 or whatever else there is nowadays is going to put positive thoughts into a child's brain. Shows like that, that revolve around murder and show more mature content are not good for the child either even if it is a more mature show.
But, if you think of it, what will really poison the minds of today's children? Is it cartoons? No. Is it murder shows? No. Is it reality television? No. It is music.
It pains me to say this, but the music of today is horrible. It gives negative images of women, having in nearly every music video a half naked woman dancing somewhere in the background. This gives false images to teenagers and younger children - they feel pressured to look like that half naked woman on televesion. They feel as though they do not fit in society for they are slightly different from the 'normal' person. Really, is this what we want people to believe?
Compared to that, comics and cartoon aren't even that horrible. Actually, they could be better; they mock the negative things about society such as politics, making us open our eyes and see that maybe what we are standing up for isn't necessarily correct. Really, I believe cartoons give more of a good idea of how life really is. Maybe that's why some people look down upon them; they are afraid to admit the truth.
Then we also have anime, aka Japanese cartoons. There is NOTHING childish about anime. Well, yes, for the ones intended for a young audience, but the ones intended for a mature audience...wow. Gore, romance, comedy, action...it's not something you see on television nowadays. Of course, it is not good for younger children but anime is definitely emotionally powerful. People do not realize this though. Just because they see that it is a 'cartoon', they assume that it is immature like any other. It's just how everyone thinks nowadays.
Finally, there is the fact that those who believe themselves to be mature find that anything cartoon related is for children. Well, yes. There are some intended for children but not all are. It's all a matter of what the show is about. Some people just don't give cartoons, comics, anime, or manga the time of day anymore. It's pitiful for they do not know what they are missing out on.
In the end, though, there is nothing we can do. People will always look down upon cartoons as they will for several other things. It's all personal interest. I personally don't think cartoons are bad. I enjoy them so I watch them. As simple as that. Why should we let the beliefs of others stop us from enjoying ourselves? We shouldn't.

Prejudice exists in many forms. It's usually the result of feeling inferior about something. Prejudice against race or religion is not tolerated in the 21st century so all that is left is judging people to be inferior based on their interests and hobbies. As long as they are not hanging you or burning down your local comic shop who cares what they think?

Well people just see cartoon and comics as just for kids. I know some are more suggestive than your average cartoon but I guess just as people get older they look to other things. Such as reality tv shows and the such.
But people like you and me. We never get to tired of cartoons. I will watch them till I'm dead. To me it's more amusing then some of the crap on TV these days.

The only reason epople look down on them is because they find cartoons and comics to be for children and immature people.
