Strange noise form the fridge?

Our fridge is about 8 years old (I think) and lately it hasn't been working as well as it should - occasional ice blocks being liquid rather than solid, milk not tasting as cold as it should, etc...

It started making a really strange noise a little while ago,, a whirring like a plane starting up, or the washing machine spinning. The noise went for about 10minutes, stopped suddenly and about 10 minutes later restarted. The freezer door was open at the time the noise started. I can't move the fridge to turn it off at the power. Anyone know what the noise could be and how to stop it? It's freaking me out...

the fan may be hitting ice that builds up around it. specially if you left the door open. shut fridge off for a couple hours then turn back on. basically, defrost it.

yes you can unplug it. by turning it off by turning of the breaker that controls that plug. open the door and turn off the breakers untill the light goes out. close the door and let it defrost tonight. turn the breaker back on in morning and see if it works better. Or just leave it off for 4 or 5 hours and not all night.

I'm going to bet that your condenser fan has failed. If you can't move it, then you haven't cleaned the lint and dust that accumulates under it and blocks the airflow across the condenser coil. (it looks like a small radiator). Plug in your make and model number in the link below.

Get someone to pull it out from the wall. There could be a mouse in it, or anything! Its dead, anyway, so look at the motor.
