    it's "were" seeing as the tense is conditional. if you were saying that twenty years ago, a group of cultists started worshipping darwin and were shut down immediately upon the discovery of disemboweled six toed cats, then it would be "was".

    Then I guess you'd also have Einsteinism and Newtonism as well. Since people also follow their theories.
