Matching Foods and side dishes?
Saturday is the big Lovers Day. I do a lot of cooking, and have been cooking for over 55 years, but I never can figure out what to serve with the main entree. I would like to prepare a descent dinner for my wife. So I have planned on Beef and Chicken shish kabobs (made and served seperately). Salt encrusted baked potato with garnishes. 7 layer salad. Home made yeast dinner rolls. Water to drink. And topped off with Cherries Jubilee.
Do you have any ideas for improvement or changes? I really would appreciate your help!

I think she will enjoy everything you are doing for her. This meal sounds great to me. Perhaps make a non - alcoholic beverage to go with the meal. Like a pina colada, or a strawberry drink.

Traditionally, shish kabob is served with pita bread, tzatziki sauce, rice, cous cous, grilled vegetables, hummus, tabouli, simple green salad ... things like that. It's a lot of knife-work.

Sounds just fine to me. The bakers sound great but what about roasted potatoes or rice? I always think of baked potatoes and huge steak.
Either way I wish I was at your place for dinner.

It's a V-day-- you need some chocolate~
It's nice and sweet, and the little bits of nougat in it are a nice surprise.
Double Chocolate Cheesecake
10 Oreo Chocolate Sandwich Cookies, crushed
2 tsp gelatine
500g Philadelphia Cream Cheese, softened
1 cup white sugar
200g Toblerone Milk Chocolate, melted
1 1/2 cups Thickened cream
1. Microwave the Oreo cookies for 30-60 seconds sot hat the cream is softened, then press firmley into the base of a buttered pan (I use a round one, about 25 cm diameter across). Chill until firm.
2. While the base is in the fridge, dissolve the gelatine with 1/4 cup of boiling water and cool. Beat the Philadelphia cheese and sugar together until smooth, then stir in the gelatine mixture and fold in the melted Toblerone and cream.
3. Pour the mixture over the chilled base and refrigerate for at least 3 hours, or until it's set. You can then serve it with cream and/or mixed berries or whatever else tickles your fancy.

Chocolate Malted Milk Cheesecake
5 (8-oz.) packages of cream cheese, softened
1 1/2 cups sugar
1 cup malted milk powder
1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa
1 (8-oz.) contained sour cream
2 teaspoons vanilla
1/4 teaspoon salt
5 eggs
1 cup whipping cream
1/2 cup chopped malted milk balls
Heat oven to 350 degrees. Line bottom only of 13x9 inch pan with foil. Spray foil with nonstick cooking spray.
In large bowl cream cheese at medium speed until fluffy.
In medium bowl, combine sugar, malted milk powder and cocoa, mix well. Add to cream cheese, beat at low speed until combined. Beat at medium speed until smooth.
Add sour cream, vanilla, and salt and beat well
Add eggs 1 at a time, beat until just combined after each addition
Pour batter into foil lined pan. Place pan in larger shallow pan, place in oven. Add hot water to shallow pan until half full. Bake at 350 degrees for 50 to 55 minutes or until set.
Remove from oven. Remove cheesecake from water bath, place on wire rack. Cool about 1 hour, or until lukewarm. Invert cheesecake onto cookie sheet, refrigerate at least 3 hours or overnight.
To serve, beat whipping cream until stiff peaks form. Cut cheesecake into squares and top with whipped cream and garnish with chopped malted milk balls

TO DIE FOR CARAMEL-BROWNIE CHEESE CAKE
1 (8 oz.) box brownie mix
1 egg
1 tbsp. water
Mix and bake the above ingredients in a greased 9 inch square pan at 350 for 25 minutes.
NOTE: If you can't find an 8 ounce box, then use smallest box you can find and follow box directions. DO NOT OVERBAKE.
1 (14 oz.) bag Kraft caramels
1 (5 oz.) can evaporated milk
Melt caramels and evaporated milk over low heat. Stir until smooth. Pour all but 1/3 caramel mixture over top of baked brownies.
2 (8 oz.) pkgs. cream cheese
1/2 c. sugar
1 tsp. vanilla
2 eggs
Beat cream cheese, sugar and vanilla until well blended. Add eggs one at a time. Blend well after each. Pour over caramel mixture in brownie pan. Bake 40 minutes at 350. Loosen cake from rim. Chill.
Reheat caramel remainder. Drizzle over chilled brownies. Drizzle chocolate sauce or hot fudge sauce over top.
