Expansion Question: What do you think will happen to the level of play if MLB were to expand?
Do you feel that it would increase the competition or water down the competition?

Depends on the market/area. As I understand Las Vegas is the fastest growing city in the US. They have been showing interest in NBA/MLB for some time now.
And then it depends on the economy...I'm thinking that if another franchise runs into deep trouble, MLB or the owners might have to consider relocating the team to Vegas. If that is the case, definitely no expansion for the next ten years.
As for watering down the competition. The thing is , it's already watered down, so I don't think it's going to make too much difference if one team is added. I said one team only. Two teams would be unrealistic at this point.
EDIT: Dob...check youself please. It has been traditional to add 2 expansion teams...is that mandated? There are 16 teams in the NL...14 in the AL....did you consider that.
However. Expansion is unlikely in this economic crisis so it's all mute at this point.

It would water down the competition. To expand you would have to 2 teams. That is adding an additional 50 players currently aren't good enough to make the majors.

More expansion will solidify the redsox and the yankees and the other few high paying teams. Expansion waters down the lower paying teams and makes it easier for the leaders to get high averages across the board.

Half the teams can't compete financially with the 32 teams that they have now. I think the level of play would go down further for those teams, and for teams like the Yankees, and Boston, who can throw money at the best hitters will thrive even more.

I've watched the amount of teams double in my lifetime; and I can tell you that it would most certainly decline. As it has over the last 40 years.
Of course there are many that would disagree with me; and will; however, many, many of those who would do so do not remember the "Level of play" back when there were 16 teams for example... So,... That's my answer!

No, no more expansion. Getting five decent starters, 32 closers, 32 power hitters, you'd end up with teams full of light hitting utility players. It would definately water everything down.

The pitching has never recovered from the last expansion. Each team has at least 2 pitchers who 20 years ago would have been in AAA or AA Ball.
No more expansion please!!

It depends... More opportunity for players... more revenue... harder to win world series... need to increase payroll tax...
dont think it is a good idea
