Christians, how would you describe a pastor's role in terms of authority?

Ok, most people would agree that a pastor is a spiritual leader/authority? But the question is how would you describe the pastor's role?

How much authority do/should they have and what is that supposed to look like?

Is there role (or should it be) more academic (teaching God's word), or personal (getting personally involved in the lives of people) or professional (like a boss as we the church are servants)?

Or is it something else?

What should people expect from their pastor, and also what should they give their pastor in return (Should people submit to their pastor, and if so how?) ?

Explain your thoughts and why?

Also any scriptural references would really help.

Thanks much.

Hello. A Pastor is just a servant of God. He is there to keep God's people on the right path. His authority is justified by God. He shouldn't be a dictator, but then he shouldn't let people in the church go around and cause disorder. People should expect there Pastor to preach the word of God and to have the churches best interest at hand. In return you can always do little things for your Pastor like mowing the grass or anything he needs. You can always just say Pastor I'm glad your my Pastor. I think there relationship should be academic and personal. A little bit of studying is good and helping out those in need is good for the Pastor too. I hope that answers your questions.

    Words That Describe A Pastor

In my church, everyone is one big family. It dosen't matter if your a kid, teen, adult, pastor or the pastor's family. Everyone is part of the family. For me a pastor is like a older sibling to me. If fact that's what they are. My youth pastor or pastor is my older brother because we are all apart of God's family. A Pastor's job description is very wide. He comes to church on Sunday to talk about a topic. It dosen't mean that he is higher than us or more worthey than us. It works like a team with a team leader. The Pastor is the team leader, and we are all apart of a team. In Suffering, the Pastor is there to comfert us, listen to us, guide us. In good times :), there are friends, and we as family do lots of different stuff togther as a family. Dances, Games, Nights out, dinner, lunches, ect. Hope it helps.

My fiance's parents are both pastors.

Prior to dating him, I would have thought pastors were more "holy" I suppose. They knew all and that they led the church. A semi personal relationship with others.

Knowing them now, they are human. They have faults and weaknesses just like everyone else. They don't really lead the church. politics run churches. As sad as that is to say, it's true.

Also, they and I don't get along so well. They dislike me because I am taking her baby and I won't be good enough...granted I have done nothing to them.

    Where's the godlyness in that?

So they are human. Nothing very special.

The pastoral letters (1 & 2 Timothy ......Titus) lay out in great detail the role of the pastor.

The man in charge of the flock should be well versed in the Scriptures.....and ready to give an answer at all times. He must also be ready to rebuke when necessary.

He must also posess the gift of teaching......this is a must

It is more accurately defined as a position, a responsibility, a calling.

The only real authority is God's.

May God have mercy on those that misrepresent Him...misrepresenting kept Moses from entering the Land. (He struck the rock from his own anger)

Specifics of the role would be determined by the needs present.

He really wouldn't have any! Minister means to minister to some one, Religion has turned the word around to mean the opposite and have become rich.
