I always thought he was like a..'Evil Spirit or Demon' or something like that....I don't remember if they ever explained exactly what he was.

I got to looking on wiki and they have some interesting info about IT. It kinda describes as an evil that has lived for millions of years and it also been tied into other works of Stephen kings.
"Although It is seemingly defeated by the novel's end, there are hints in King's later works that It is not dead. In The Tommyknockers (1987), a character hears chuckling noises coming from the drains in his house; later, another character driving through Derry glimpses "a clown, with silver dollars for eyes, holding a bunch of balloons" waving at him from a storm drain. And in Dreamcatcher (2001), the main character visits Derry and sees a plaque from the Losers made in honor of the children It killed. On the plaque, in graffiti, is a phrase that would frighten any member of the Loser's Club: "Pennywise Lives." Furthermore, It had laid eggs shortly before Its defeat, and whether or not they were all destroyed is never resolved"

Also sounds like a remake might be in the works:
The Sci Fi channel announced a 4 hour remake of the film which will be made sometime in 2009 or 2010

Pennywise is an evil entity disguised (sort of) as a clown. He is the base of the evil in the town that the children are haunted by even into adulthood when the death of the of the group incites a confrontation. Yeah, the giant spider bit was something of a let-down but for a TV film,it was and is good

I think the book would give a better description of what Pennywise was supposed to be. Sorry but I didn't read the book.

No clue, but the movie was a whole lot better when he was just a clown (and not some huge spider or whatever the hell he was).
I doubt he was a product of their imaginations, though, because when they grew up, I don't think their imaginations could have been as active.

No - he's real. He kidnapped the boy's brother, didn't he.
An he was creepy as a clown, but stoopid as a giant spider. Talk about run out of ideas at the end.

He is the boogie man that was under your bed or in the closet when we were kids. King just brought it to existence, so to speak.
