Honest question hockey fans...?

when it comes to hockey, i just don't get it. i am not a fan. i have a hard time seeing the "beauty" of a hockey goal when ESPN shows top plays, and what looks to me to be a standard, normal, no-frills goal is compared to a great basketball pass-and-dunk, or a diving baseball catch. when i'm watching with friends, we mock the goals the same way we mock a WNBA layup with fake oohs and aahs. i didn't come here to insult you or your sport, just wondering if it really does compare as a top play with the great plays of another sport (basketball, football, baseball). i don't see it, but i don't have an appreciation for the sport (although i totally appreciate the athleticism and agility of hockey players). just looking for something insightful. thanks.

Update:

you're right CT, i joke about sports when i watch with my friends, i must have no life.

Update 2:

you're right daven, doesn't sound so honest when i say i joke about it. almost didn't add that detail.

i guess i don't see how one hockey goal stands out over the rest. so when i joke about hockey goals, it's because the one that made top plays doesn't look any more spectacular than the ones that didn't

Update 3:

actually leafsfan, i'm familiar with the women's game (hoops, that is). good that they have a league, but just because they're in the pros doesn't mean they could all beat ordinary joes. i know this much from experience. some would beat me, many could not.

Honestly, I don't understand basketball. I mean, every dunk looks exactly the same to me, every alley-oop looks the same, and every half-court shot looks like luck. I mean, someone takes one of those shots every quarter, odds are that they go in once in awhile, no?

I can respect some basketball player's accomplishments, but honestly, I don't think it's impressive. Hockey, on the other hand, seems to require more skill and more precision, and I can easily differentiate the plays and see the intricacies of the sport.

I don't think there's going to be an answer for you, honestly. Hockey is one of the fastest sports out there, and fans can respect that the players do what they do at such a fast speed. They don't have time to think, and there is a defender on them in a second. Playing on ice, you also have less control than you would on a court or field. It just makes what hockey players do all the more impressive. You can't pass to where a player IS, you have to predict where they (and the defenders) WILL BE. It's tough to do.

But hey... I guess your view of hockey is mine of basketball. Would I like to see basketball out of the top 10? Of course... I mean when 8 of the 10 are exactly the same, how do you rank them? I think the most basic of hockey plays are more impressive than a dunk or three-pointer.

EDIT: SOLID: uhhh, I hope that a brain surgeon has more concentration than a hockey player. Like... really hope so.

I'm going to take your point in saying that you don't understand how it works, much like I don't see the finesse required for basketball, or even worse, football. I think its one of those things you need to constantly pay attention to. While you may watch hockey and say, "Who cares, he hit the little rubber thingy", try to understand he can't use his hands like other athletes and has to direct the rubber thingy with a mind of its own past someone else's body, and potentially 5 other bodies on the way, controlling his speed at the same time. I have the same difficulty understanding what's so great about a guy pushing 7 feet tall gets the oohs and ahhhs for throwing something 3 feet. The "amazingness" of a full court launch is the same as that as a shot from far out through a full strength screen. Moreover, a basketball net really isn't guarded, nobody is allowed to take you out when you actually make the attempt at scoring. In hockey, you're not really safe and there's no distance between the ground and the goal to give you any room to work with. Imagine a guy, slightly smaller than the cirumfrance of the net, sitting in it with a ginormous stick and gloves and padding. What are you really gonna do?

rofl, you come on here and rant off about how easy hockey looks and mock top 10 hockey plays, then say you aren't insulting the sport. Enjoy your sport where if you touch the other player it's a foul, and the last 2 minutes you intentionally foul and drag the boring game on and on. Let's not get started with baseball, baseballs not even a sport anymore with all the cheaters. Find me a sport that plays with the intensity of hockey for 82 games a year. There are no byes, they play 3-4 times a week at a faster pace than any other sport. It's ok, you would probably be the fan that yells,"Shoot!" or ask ,"Why do they shoot the puck to the other end?" on a penalty kill.. Good riddance!

Source(s): Good job man. You can beat most women at basketball. Do you think you're tough? You seem like you're still in high school with your maturity level. Get bent.

Everyone has their own opinion. Hockey is my favorite sport. There is something beautiful and wondrous about an athlete playing a game while skating on ice. The moves and use of skating techniques is amazing. It took my quite a few yeas to truly appreciate and understand it, It was hard to watch the puck. But now, I love it. Hockey players are often underrated and really nice people. Try really watching a game. Look at the stick handling, puck carrying, passing and the quick movement of the players. Watch the goalie move to block shots. I believe many people do not watch hockey, because it is more complicated than some other sports.

I know I am biased, but I have never played sports, and have only been on skates once.

You don't like hockey and that's why you don't see the "beauty" of an awesome goal. Have you seen The Goal by Ovechkin? I haven't seen that done too many times. But what I have seen are hell of a lot of dunks EVERY day on SportsCenter. They all start to look the same. Some of them are impressive, but others just look repetative especially when half the top 10 are dunks. The hockey goals on Top 10 plays stand out because of the finesse or power some of them show. How do any of the dunks stand out from the rest? Just because it's Lebron James is doing it? I like basketball, but come on, why does every other play have to be from it?

Maybe if you watch an actual hockey game instead of the replays shown by ESPN you might understand. I suggest that you come onto Yahoo tonight at 7:30 ET and watch the game for a little bit. It features two of the best teams in the league going after each other. It should be a really good game.

...This is of course assuming that you are in neither the Detroit or San Jose area (in which case you can't get the game).

In my opinion, as a hockey fan, The fact that pucks are constantly redirected and tipped in, and that it takes a great deal of skill to get past defense men is very impressive when goals are scored. With things like basketball i can't take them seriously. If you can get onto their side of the court you are pretty much guaranteed 2 points, Hence the 100+ scoring basketball games. THAT is boring. Who wants to be happy every 17 seconds in a game cheering? How about the fact that you not only have to aim for a guarded target, but that you have to do it on frozen water with blades on your feet.

I've been to several Hockey games and the crowds are much more alive than other sporting events.

See, the difference between basketball and hockey is that you expect to see basket after basket in baseketball. If i'm not mistaken, don't you get 30 seconds to put the ball in the hoop or you lose the ball? or something like that?

Whereas in hockey, you can go a whole game without a single goal in regulation time..... Goals are scarce in most games of hockey, but in basketball the score can be as high *** 100.

    Hi

It all comes down to the passion. Another regular on here and I were talking about it the other day. On friday night I had played the most beautiful game of pool I have played, It was simplistic in its elegance. To someone that has no interest in pool though it would have meant nothing. They wouldn't share in my passion for the game. I have a feeling that watching Tiger sink a long putt for birdie means nothing to you, yet watching a kicker make a 50 year field goal to win a game will get you off your seat. If you ask someone though with no interest in American Football and the kick out right appears pointless and even unnecessary, yet often they make Sport Centers Top Ten. I often ask myself what the big deal about a guy catching a ball in stride and running untouched for a touchdown. It is what he is paid to do, it was simply the play working out and a defender being out of position. What is the big deal?

So like I said it comes down to your interest and passion for the sport if you have neither then you have a hard time understanding whats so special about a seemingly normal play.

    Good Bye

I see people dunking the ball at the gym nothing special about basketball to me.

Hockey players need to have the strength and power of a football player, the stamina of a marathon runner, and the concentration of a brain surgeon. But need to put all this together while moving at high speeds on a cold and slippery surface while 5 other guys use clubs try to take your head off, this whole time while standing on blades 1/8 of an inch thick.
