What is so terribly wrong with socialism?

And before you start screaming about Obama and the budget, let me tell you: We DO NOT have socialism in this country. Anyone who thinks we do is seriously overreacting!

Depends on the brand of socialism.

Some socialist systems work fairly well--lok at Denmark and Sweden.

Two forms of socialism are bad. Period. One is the extreme left-wing version--communism. Then you have adictatorship, the abolishment of all markets, private property, and individual rights. Note, hwever, that in NO case in history has an industrialized country adopted commuism. A few had it forced on them by the Soviet Union for a time--and threw it out the second they got a chance.

The other is the right-wing version--fascism. That features putting favored corporations in control of the economy, abolishing individual rights, and aggressive expansionism (wars of conquest)--and extreme racism.

Both feature things like spying on citizens without warrants, torture, starting wars against countries that have not attacked them. Detention withot trial, opposition to labor rights and unions, smearing or outright persecution of anyone who disagrees with them, and a claim they have a "mission to spread their way of life" to other nations--whetherthose other nations like it or not.

One more thing--"If fascism ever comes to America, it will arrive wrapped in the flag and carrying a cross." (Sinclair Lewis).

"Conservatives" in America are not opposed to socialism--as long as it's teir brand of socialism. It's the rest of us who don't want socialism. We jsut aren't pathological about it.

Ask the former Soviet bloc countries, North Koreans, and Cubans. Ever wonder why they leave their homes by the boat load?

Socialism is usually sought after by those who believe in class warfare. Socialism gets rid of social classes by making everyone poor. There is no incentive to do that extra credit in school, stay that extra five minutes to get a customer to leave with a smile, or make that sales report just a little more clear. Why? Because you make the same money as the drive thru guy at McDonald's.

Socialism may not be here YET, but it is on it's way. Hopefully America wakes up before it is too late. I don't understand why so many believe that it is the government's job to bail anyone out of their messes nor do I understand anyone who thinks they have a right to someone else's rewards for hard work. Socialism embraces "equality" for all...but in reality it is not so....how may of the common people are able to afford the food, housing, clothing and vacations of the royals? Socialism embraces equality for everyone" EXCEPT the elitists that control the Socialist Governments. Read factual history and discover the answer for yourself.

There is nothing wrong with collective ownership of the means of productions and egalitarian wealth distribution if it is voluntarily agreed upon. Where socialism fails and becomes morally invalid is when it becomes involuntary.

If 10 frat guys come together to produce beer and divide up their profits equally, then that is perfectly valid. If 9 drink away their share of the profits while 1 invests his profits and reaps dividends due to owning more capital, then it is morally invalid that these 9 guys forcefully take that one person's extra profit and divvy it up in an egalitarian manner.

Were you sleeping under a rock? Welfare, SS, WIC, government-funded education, energy, ownership of land, farms, regulation of businesses, private control of currency to a private bank, are sings that we have been living under Keynes, a brand of socialism. But as government increases over the years, it only gets more inefficient, bureaucratic, secretive, too regulatory onto others, too powerful, yet increasing spending overseas, printing/borrowing money, while increasing debt and inflation. If you think socialism is not "wrong" look at the USSR, and how/why it collapsed. You might it looks good on paper, history says otherwise. Socialism only leads to corruption, greediness, and laziness of the public. Learn history, or go back to sleep

you don't have socialism with a capital S, but you do definitely have socialism to a degree. I don't like socialism because of it's distorting effect on society, it takes cause and effect, supply and demand, and mixes them up so you can't tell what's what.

Socialism is incompatible with human nature. A free market (with government oversight) harnesses the desire of most humans to compete and succeed. Socialism breeds mediocrity. The desire of the human heart to help those less fortunate than ourselves can be satisfied without the intervention of government.
