Most banks offer a kidcard now. You would give him $100 cash in case of emergency, then a 'Student Card' as that is what most of them are called.
You can put a maximum of like $30 a day on the card, then check the account on-line daily to make sure he has enough money.
It would be best to tell your son to eat at the hotel as much as possible. The food costs in the park are huge.

As someone else mentioned, if he is eating at the parks and park hotels, about the best he could do is $10 per meal. He will almost definitely eat at least once or twice for more than that. Letting him have $50 a day for food and snacks is not at all unreasonable. For souvenirs, you just need to make a guess. Give him $10, he'll spend it. Give him $1,000, he'll spend it. So whatever you can afford - a couple hundred bucks would be nice. EVERYWHERE at Disney takes credit cards, so I would recommend a minimum of cash.

Depends if he has to pay for every meal. Go to site below for all disney menus and prices. As you can see even a counter service meal is going to be $10. He can easily spend $40 per day on breakfast, lunch, dinner and a drink or two.
I would get a credit card that can be replace if lost. One that has a certain amount of money on it and can be refunded if lost or stolen. maybe a American Express travelers CC. Check with your bank.
edit. I assumed you son will be staying at a disney resort. food there will be expensive too. site below will have resort menus.

pre paid credit card would be best with about 50 in cash for some of the kiosk snack carts that only take cash. Arcade in hotel area, etc.
I would say about 300$ to start. If he runs out, you can get add to his card especially if you get the student card from walmart. where there is one for parents and one for the kid.

maybe give him a credit card, and some cash
credit card for whatever he would like to buy, and maybe like 100$ in cash to buy drinks, and snacks
It gets very hot in Disney so he will be thirsty, and get hungry easily
Hope he has fun
