Would you consider this UnAmerican?
Today another YA user asked the question " Why is BBC World News now available in the United States? This is disgusting?".
I replied - You have a problem with unbiased News?
She sent me an email, telling me that I hate the USA and that I am Un-American. What do you think? I already know what Laura thinks, but I am wondering what other Americans think.
Isn't blocking news sources, more like the actions of someone like Hugo Chavez?
The question is..is airing bbc world news, or watching it make you unAmerican? And is blocking news sources to the public something usually done by totalitarians and dictators?

OK, I am an American and BBC America is a chanel that many American cable providers offer. I love it because I can finally Watch Dr. Who again!
To answer your actual question, a desire to block sources of news definitely goes against the spirit of the founding fathers of the United States and thus would be "Un-American" in the classic sense.
As for BBC news being unbiased? It would be far more accurate to say it has a DIFFERENT bias and is valuable in that sense. NO news source is "unbiased" they all just have different biases.

I don't think the BBC is unbiased but do watch on occasion-like to see different view points. I even see Al Jeezera European version some times (actually find it among the least biased actually which I think is strange considering reputation); every news source is going to be biased one way or the other so viewing many different ones and taking the total picture means you will get closer to the truth. Funny to hear so many liberals here saying how it is unAmerican to even think about blocking that; Fairness Doctrine is different in what way?

I watch BBC World News and CCTV (from China) all the time. It is great to see opinions and news from a different perspective (ie the rest of the world). When we travel to Europe, Asia or Canada I always watch the news to get their spin or take on what is happening in the world.
I think you get a wider range of ideas and takes on what is really happening in the news by watching or reading mutliple sources from multiple countries. This makes you a better person not just a better American.

I think these people are the most gullible, ignorant people in the world. So ignore them & they will disappear. They all seem to have the same judgements. They hate unions, hollywood, government workers (even when they work for the gov. Micheal Steele recently ranted about that) they hate anyone they think is different from them but will use the person if they think they can bring in votes. They are pitiful so don't waste your happy energy on them. They believe everything a con artist tells them & nothing good decent people tell them. If you ask them to explain so you can get understanding they have no anwers but wil attack someone who has nothing to do with the question. Our concern should be how to help them get deprogramed. Addicts think they are doing the right thing.

I can't understand why anyone would have a problem with the BBC news being available in the US. I am in favor of Americans having access to ALL sources of news. Much, if not most news is really just propaganda. The best way to see through propaganda is to have multiple sources.
I listen to what Al Jazeera has to say. Of course it is propaganda, but so is our major media. Free people should never be afraid of listening to other people's views. Only tyrants want to restrict your access. Watch for the Obama Regime's attempt to control the Internet.

Every form of media is biased. Every organization, and every person has an agenda. My Founding Four Fathers wanted the media to be an unbiased thing, but how could it have ever been as such when this great and sacred soil which holds the blood of my Four Fathers has become no more than extension of the greedy European nations which so many men fought to break away from.. Any clown who thinks media is unbiased is a blind fool who knows not the world which he, or she lives in. That is a great example of a blissfully ignorant person.

Nowhere in the world will you find unbiased news reports.
All news is slanted to present the current government in power as being the next best thing to a Casino.
And it's all BAD news. Have you ever come across a commercial news caster or newspaper that covers only GOOD NEWS!
In your dreams pal, bad news sells newspapers and glues the audience to the TV.
Have you ever seen a new government in power wave a magic wand and make everybody happy?

No, your response was not un-American. My response was similar. Personally, I believe that most all news is biased in some way or another. It's why I choose to get mine from several different sources. From everything I've seen, Laura appears to be one of those people who is content to live within a bubble, with religion being her primary source of comfort. I imagine her to be one of those folks who won't let her kids reat Twilight books or watch Harry Potter because they're evil and against God. Whatever... life goes on.

The BBC is definitely not unbiased news. It is extremely biased.
However, I have no problem at all with it being made available.
I wish they would make more of the channel 4 documentaries available here as well. They repackage some of them but as a whole we miss them. They are just beautiful. I wish they had a channel 4 rebroadcast channel available here.

The question of what is American need to be answered first. To me, to be American is to be wedded to spirit of Democracy. To be an American is to respect the individual person even though you may violent disagree with him/her. We must at all odds allow for due process in our court system and not allow righteous indignation to cloud our sense of fair play. Keeping people in prison indefinitely without a fair impartial hearing is un-American.
