What's a good dog food for a dog with BAD gas!!?

Peyton is 38lbs and she is very healthy. I feed her Iams wet and dry food twice a day, no table food, and she eats natural treats. With all this, her gas is HORRIBLE! and it's embarrassing when people come over, because they immediately want to leave. I don't know what is causing the gas, but I summed it up to the food. I read up on Blue Buffalo, but didn't read good personal review about them. If someone has other suggestions please let me know. Also, Peyton doesn't like dry food alone, and it must be mixed with something wet, other than water, like wet food, or plain yogurt(only used a couple times when ran out of wet food) If you have suggestions, please share!

The crap Iams is giving him gas and it's extremely unhealthy for him to boot.

Canned dog food is a little bit better than dry dog food but it's all made of animal parts and CORN that are "unsuitable for human consumption." Do you understand what that means? That means that it's devoid of nutrition and/or carries hormone levels or toxins that are too dangerous for humans. Well food manufacturers don't want to just throw that stuff out! Heck no! Not when there's a profit to be made!

So they sell it to dog food companies!

Meat processing plants sell everything that can possibly pass FDA inspection to people food. The absolute worst stuff goes into hot dogs and other canned foods and the putrid leftovers get sold at a low price to DOG FOOD COMPANIES.

Many food processing companies have a secondary dog food plant right in line with their "people food" plant so NOTHING goes to waste. Not even the rotting garbage.

Iams and other major pet food manufacturers use the worst of the worst meats and for fatty acids and oil they buy the used putrid cooking grease that gets dumped into the big dumpsters behind restaurants that they buy in bulk. That is not a joke. That's what we, as consumers are giving to our beloved babies.

Television ads and marketing has told us for the last 60 years that this stuff is the "only" thing we should feed.

    Horse pucky!

I'm here to tell you that science is finding out that dogs live for 30% longer and have healthier bodies and teeth if they eat a major variety of different things.

There are a few people foods that aren't good for them but barring that it's all the way! Don't EVER let anyone tell you any different.

I feed my dogs "the dreaded table scraps" almost every day. Many times they get RAW chicken and RAW beef. If there's not enough for them then once in a while it's a high grade canned dog food and let me tell you my dogs look FANTASTIC. They're healthy, muscular, have vibrant white teeth, and more often than not they play all day long.

Don't feed only dry food! It's crap crap crap crap. The "healthy organic" dry food is crap too don't buy the hype. It's CRAP that's MARKETED as healthy. Beneful is just as bad as OLD ROY.

Science is also finding out that wild dogs are creatures of opportunity and eat more like an omnivore than a pure carnivore. That's why it's a great idea to incorporate veggies into your dog's diet.

Also keep in mind that if you're a GOOD SHOPPER, you can actually SAVE MONEY buying certain foods and veggies for your dogs instead of crap dog food. Did you hear that? That's right! I save a few dollars too every week! Worst case is I break even.

AND if you're feeding healthier - your vet bills will be less!

Just remember - if you're cooking healthy for yourself - then the scraps you give will be pretty good for Sparky too. If you're eating McDonalds and so is Sparky then he's at all the same risks that you are for weight gain and other things - for the most part.

If you're at the grocery store and you see a great sale on carrots, then GUESS WHAT!? Well that's what Sparky will be eating tonight! Believe me he doesn't care! My dogs LOVE carrots anyways!

Iams isn't a very good dog food, because of all the fillers.

Sometimes dogs get gas from canned foods, by the way. You can always soak the dog's evening meal in water til it's soft, and that would provide the dog with a change of pace.

I have listed, in sources below, a couple of websites which review dog foods. The better foods are a little more expensive, but not that much more.

I also feed Kirkland L&R and we don't have gas issues with our 3 dogs. How quickly did you add it to their diet? If you didn't mix it slowly with their old food, the switch might have been made too quickly and their bodies are trying to adjust to the change. It could be all the veggies in the food if their systems haven't had to break down veggies before. If you switched from a not-so-great food to this one, it might be because it's so drastic a change. Gas is generally temporary, but you'll need to give the Kirkland brand at least a few weeks in their systems to see if things begin to settle down. Remember, this will happen anytime you change their foods too quickly or too drastically. Good Luck

If your dog has gas on a regular basis that means she's not digesting her food well so yes, it's time for a change.

This site really helped me make smart choices: www.dogfoodanalysis.com.

PS. Plain yogurt is really good for your dog : )

Well, the wet food is probably a big contributor to the gas. Blue Buffalo is actually a really good food, but not all foods are good for all dogs. As for your dog not eating dry food, ummm, she has you trained really well. Dogs will not starve themselves, unless they are ill.

My aussie can clear a room with her gas. I switched her to California natural lamb and rice formula, and it has done absolute wonders for her. She still has gas occasionally, but no where near what it was before. It is a very high quality food, and she doesn't need to eat a ton of it to fulfill her caloric requirements.

I highly suggest it. And you don't need to mix it with wet food. Just put it down for 20 min in the morning, then pick it up. Put it back down for 20 minutes in the evening, and pick it back up. Trust me, she will learn to eat when the food is down.

ADD: I will edit another post. Innova EVO has way to much protein for a normal house dog. Only dogs that are mushing, herding, schutzhund or other very athletic forms of exercise need that much protein in their diets.

Switched my dog to Blue Buffalo brand dry and wet food. A lot less gas and a wonderful change in his coat. I highly recommend the Blue Buffalo Brand and Nutro Brand, as well as other holistic brands. Go for a healthy holistic brand of dog food. Petsmart and Petco all now carry the holistic brands.

  • Iams is one of the worst dog foods since it's main ingredient is corn or some sort of carb, switch to a high protein food or feed your dog a raw diet (http://www.rawmeatybones.com/) also you can buy charcoal tablets to absorb the gas in your dogs stomach.

Many people love the idea of owning a dog but one thing that they have to keep in mind often times, is that the dog needs to be trained. Learn here http://onlinedogtraining.enle.info/?VGeh

While the pet may look heart-breakingly cute when it's in a shelter or at the pound, picking out the dog is only the first part of the relationship between dog owner and the animal. Many people don't understand that they have to put time and effort into socializing the dog.

An unsocialized dog will intimidate others, tear up the home, and will create an environment that can become so bad that the it will have to be returned. Many times when dogs have to be returned to shelters or to other resources, it will end up euthanized, which is very heartbreaking. All of this can be spared if a person learns the various techniques in order to socialize the dog.

One thing that they have to understand is that the he wants to be told what to do. It's in the canine nature to follow a leader. The dog will be more than willing to obey the leadership of its master. Here's a look at some common techniques that are used in dog training:

    "Dog Whispering"

This is a technique that has been around for a while, but gained national notoriety over the last 10 years. Some people might hear this term and wonder how in the world whispering to a dog can train it! Whispering isn't meant to be taken literally in this case. As trainers have shown, whispering is a term that refers to connecting with a being or an entity on a very deep and almost spiritual level. When it comes to dog training techniques, dog whispering involves careful observation of the dog's behavior and actions.

It literally entails getting inside the mind and the behavior system of the canine. When a person uses dog whispering techniques, they interact with the dog on the canine level. Again, one the most common mistakes that people make is treating the dog like a small human being.

    "Reward Training"

Reward training is very simple and it's one of the older tricks that works. This is a simple method of training the dog by positive reinforcement. Once he does what it is told to do, it receives a treat. How this works is that the dog owner must entice the dog towards the treat. Once the canine develops awareness for the treat, it develops a strong desire for it. When the desire for it is extremely strong, the dog owner pulls back. Then the dog receives a command and when the dog obeys the command, it receives the treat. The object is to make the dog associate a treat with the command.

    "Clicker Training"

Other dog training techniques include one that is similar to reward training, which is called clicker training. How this works is that the clicker is incorporated to get the dog's attention. The clicker is clicked as a form of communication with the dog. It learns that there is a command or reward associated in conjunction with the clicker. Many people claim that this is fun, and they actually make a game with the dog by using the clicker for their dog training tasks.

    "Ultrasonic Whistle"

Last, a relatively new form of dog training technique is called the ultrasonic whistle. This works because the ultrasonic sound is only heard by the dog. When the owner is trying to communicate a command, or stop the dog from barking, they will blow on their whistle when they want to communicate a command to the dog. The benefit of this is that the humans can't hear this noise, but the dog can hear it, and they will learn to associate the sound with a command.

Dog training techniques aren't hard to incorporate, but they are something that absolutely must be incorporated from the time a dog owner brings their new dog home. No matter how old or how young the dog is, they will need training. Once they are trained properly, they will be a wonderful addition to one's family.

I have had good results with Purina Beneful, the yogurt should help also. Try walking her or some sort of exercise before guests come over. With Beneful, they don't have as much gas and also don't go in such great quantities! (I have a Great Dane and yellow lab)
