Does anyone have a good home remedy to relieve coughs?

The doctor has prescribed medicine for me to take but it's not working. I have a dry, scratchy cough all day & night. I've used all forms of robitussin and muscinex. Nothing is working.

If you are familiar with powder form of Elm then get it,Put pinch of Elm powder in warm water and gargle it atleast 3 times a day, specially before bed time and drink nothing after that.continue to do it til you get better.make sure warm water gets deep in your throat.don't swallow. If you are living in the area where Indian grocery store then you can get it from there.Good luck.

Edit:Elm powder also sometimes cures normal dental problem.it's solid form being used as a antiseptic after shave.DON'T MISTAKEN WITH SLIPPERY ELM POWDER AS ITS DIFFERENT.Just for your inf.

When mucus in the breathing tubes is the problem, this may be made thinner and less sticky by several means. Increased humidity in the air will help. A vaporizer and steamy shower are two ways to increase the humidity. In the severe croup cough of small children, high humidity is absolutely essential. Drinking large quantities of fluids also is helpful for the cough. Guailfensin (Robitussin or Naldecon CX, for example) is available without prescription and may help thin the mucus. Liberal use of such common home substances as pepper and garlic does likewise and may help relieve the cough.

Decongestant and / or antihistamines may help if a postnasal drip is causing the cough. Otherwise, avoid drugs that contain antihistamines because they dry the secretions and make them thicker.

Dry, tickling coughs are often relieved by cough lozenges or sucking on hard candy. Dextromethorphan (Romilar, Vicks Formula 44, Robitussin-DM, etc.) is an effective cough suppressant. Neither dextromethorphan nor codeine will completely eliminate coughs at any dosage, and side effects of drowsiness or constipation can occur. And good luck.
