What is the best handheld VHF marine radio brand?
My rowing team is looking to purchase marine radios for our coaches. Our coaches drive alongside our rowing shells in small rowboats with motors, and want handheld VHF marine radios so that they can communicate with each other and other boats during our practices.
Can you tell me anything about the reliability of the different marine radio brands? I'm currently looking at ICom, Standard Horizon, Cobra, and Uniden. Our price range is $200 or less per radio. Are any of these brands particularly known for quality/durability?
I don't know much about marine radios, so any information you can give me would be great!

We carry a Uniden on our boat that's waterproof and floats and we love it! For the use you're talking about you don't need anything that has any kind of range with the signal since most communications will be of a close nature.
All 3 you mention are good radios and will suffice for what you're seeking.
Great thing for the team to get for them too!

No authority in the world is interested in harassing users of radio if they are using it in a professional manner, and not causing issues with other users. They have real things to do. They will most certainly look for idiots and stuck mic.s on emergency repeater frequencies though. It is considered far more important to have a safe communication with any vessel on the water than quibble over a minor detail - the main objective is safety on the water. Having said that doing a Radio Operators Certificate Of Proficiency (ROCOP) or equivalent teaches you to use the radio correctly and at the right time and on the right channels - it is normally a day course. As soon as any commercial situation exists this is normally mandatory. Edit - it is not illegal to use VHF in much of the world recreationally. Check with your local authorities about your personal situation. It is even then only an issue if the radio is being used in a silly manner. All efforts are to safety at sea first.

I use GME Electrophone mostly. I also have Icom and my sailing clubs use uniden as well. They are all equally good - invest in the waterproof pouches, we regularly get 6 or 7 hours straight. We recharge after every use, and maintain charge at least every six weeks in the off season. The batteries are original and at least four years old with this treatment.. I have not used the other two.

I've owned Standard Horizon and Icom.....I think I'd go icom. I'd negotiate the price.....and waterproof pouches are a good second line of safety. Just one opinion.

I have carried a MODIFIED 2 METER Icom for YEARS.. and it works as well on marine frequencies as it does on ham frequencies and there have been times when I needed BOTH forms of communications in just one package.

Would have to agree with ICOM - but all you named are good radios.

I have been very happy with my Icom. Can't say it's the best, but I am satisfied.
