Out new kitten is scratching and loosing hair ,why?
Hello, we adopted a baby kitten 2 weeks ago, about one week ago I noticed he was loosing hair above the right eye all the way to the ear, now it has patches of bare skin on the feet, tail and one on the belly, I am using a flea talcum powder but think it's not enough as it does have fleas, could this be an allergy to the fleas?, or something more serious...I don't have money to pay the vet so I was thinking that a bath with flea shampoo could help him...should I try?... can cats be bathed as dogs?....the kitten is eating very well, it is very playful and runs all around the house, but he does not stop scratching.
Thank you all!...The little guy I adoped it from the street, the mother did not want him anymore, the cat is not super infested with fleas, it does have but not so many, I googled and found pics of flea allergy and they are the same so I am thinking he is allergic to fleas, tomorrow I will call and see if there is a low cost vet or service,if not I will do my best, I love my kitten very much and will do my best so he can heal soon, and why did I adopt him without having money??...Hey, we the ones that don't have a lot of money love animals too,and want to have pets same as everybody, only difference is we can't afford to pay so much to a vet when I could first ask here for advice, thank you all.

If your cat is a baby kitten, he cannot have a flea bath. It could kill him at his young age. You can get a pill called Capstar from the vet which is safe to use on kittens. Frontline is also too strong for babies. Also I am wondering if the flea powder is too much for the little guy and possibly only complicating the problem with his skin. There are some other possibilities-
Could be his food- Evo is a good all natural food, he might be allergic to the fillers commonly found in cheaper foods.
Could be the powder
Could be scented litter- Try Swheat Scoop all natural, unscented litter
Could have dry skin and dermatitis
Could be stress
Cats shouldn't be bathed normally, only if theres a reason. Bathing can dry out their skin. Also you are likely to get scratched up!
If you cannot afford a vet, you really should call around to organizations and see who has a low cost program. The Humane Society will work with you if you don't have enough money for the vet. They don't announce it, but they will. Whether they let you make small payments or even lower the cost of the services. Last time my cat went there it was $30 and they let me pay $10 a month for 3 months. That included antibiotics. I also think they would have taken less if I couldn't afford it but I thought $30 was fair and I could handle it. I think you could try a couple more days with the better food, unscented natural litter, etc. but if it doesn't go away or if you think your cat has fleas get him to a vet so they can give him Capstar. Nothing else is going to be safe for a baby kitten. Good luck.

He/she could be having an allergic reaction to the powder that you are using. How old is your kitten. It the current treatment you are using made for especially for kitten? I would go to a pet store & see if they have something better than the power that you are using...there are products out there made especially for kittens & puppies. There are special flee treatments out there that are just rubbed in...sort of like a "dry bath" that isn't powder. Its a solution that you spray or run into their fur. Cats can be bathed like dogs but not as often. They need the natural oils in their fur. I wouldn't give him/her a bath if you can help it right now. Also he/she could be allergic to the kitty litter that you are using. I have a cat that can only use a certain brand that has less dust. It could be getting into his or her fur & irritating the skin (the same could be true for the flee powder you are using). Cheaper is not always better. While I understand about not always having the money to see a vet...I just spent over $200 on my cat last week...but if your kitten doesn't get better after changing the flee treatment and/or litter I would definitely suggest finding a way to take then to see a vet. There are usually clinics in most areas that will treat your pet that aren't as expensive. Good Luck!

Your kitten may have feline scabies or ring worm. If the skin is dry and flaky looking then it is probably ring worm, which would be a good thing because it can be treated easily and very inexpensively! You should google both feline scabies and ringworm to see if the pictures look similar to your kitten. If it has ringworm you can buy lotrimin at any drugstore and apply it with a q tip to the infected areas about 2 times a day for 2-3 weeks and it will clear up. Depending on where you adopted the kitten from they may treat him. Almost any rescue group or humane society would not mind looking at him if you just got him a week ago.
The fleas would most likely not cause the kitten to lose his hair. You should buy a flea comb (about a $1 at wal-mart) to brush all of the fleas of of him. Make sure you have a cup of water beside you so you can drown the fleas once they are removed.

Why did you adopt a kitten if you don't have money to care for it? The kitten needs to see a vet. It could have allergies to the flea powder or any number of things going on. By using alot of different flea products in a short period of time, you could actually poison your kitten. The flea treatments you buy in stores typically don't work and can even be dangerous for your kitten. If you can't afford to have a vet treat your kitten, you need to return it to where you got it so it can have the chance to find a home where it will get the care it needs.
Throughout this kitten's life, there will be times it needs to see a vet. The first year you have it, you'll spend about $200 at the vet. He'll need shots, neutered, and treatment if he becomes sick. I know you meant no harm when you took him but seriously, if you can't afford to care for him, don't keep him.

Hon, if you dn't have money for a vet, why would you get an animal. I am not giving you a lecture... just saying they need shots, worm treatment and medical care if you want a happy healthy pet.
Your cat could have ringworm or even mange mites. It's hard to tell.
Overkill on the flea powder could be unhealthy for the kitten.
Yes kittens can have baths. Make sure it's old enough to have flea treatments (you can read the product labels)
If the kitten has ringworm or mange, it needs to see the vet.

I would take the kitten to the vet because there are some more serious cases where there could be a bad case of fleas or worse. The best thing to do is ask a veteranarian if there is something wrong with the cat before it becomes to serious.

He could have other problems besides fleas. Yes the fleas can cause flea allergy dermatitis, they can also cause tapeworm infections.
If you don't have the money to take the cat to a vet, I suggest you call a local humane society for advice or arrange to surrender your pet so it can get proper medical treatment and find a home that will be able to take care of him.

it may be caused from the flee powder...i would definitely take him to the vet and see what is really causing this......also they will de-flee him and and may take a test to find out if it is a allergy or just flees/////sounds like he has them really bad..he is definitely is suffering .sounds like the flees are eating him alive......... i beleive he does need a vet check before he goes bald and scratches all his hair out and tears his skin apart and gets his skin bleeding and infected..........the best way to get rid of his flees is to let the vet give him the proper flee medicine to kill them right away within 24 hours do not try any more store bought remedies as you could hurt him even more.........make the appointment before the flees kill him and makes him suffer from anemia and they will suck all his blood out of his little body HE IS BEING EATEN ALIVE RIGHT NOW BY THE FLEES........CALL IN THE MORNING AND LET THE VET CHECK HIM OUT AND LET THEM PUT SOMETHING ON HIM THAT WILL KILL THE FLEES RIGHT AWAY..YOU HAVE NOT SUCEEDED SO LET THE PROFESSIOALS TAKE CARE OF HIM BEFORE YOU LOSE HIM.....GOOD LUCK AND GOD BLESS YOU LITTLE ANGEL AND I PRAY THAT HE WILL BE HEALED

your kitten might have a parasite called walking dandruff. it sounds silly but my rabbit just got it. if your kitten is haveing irritated skin and has a lot of dandruff you NEED to take him to the vet. they need a certain medicine through shots once every two weeks for about eight weeks.
