When do you give a thumbs up, or thumbs down?

I usually don't give either one. But if someone seems to have put a lot of thought into an answer (even if it opposes what I believe) and if the answer does not give absolutely false information, then I give it a thumbs up. If the answer insults the person asking, or does not attempt to answer the question then I give it thumbs down.

Update:

Oh yes, the LONG pasted in comments.. I give them Thumbs down just so I don't have to read them every time I scan the answers.

Update 2:

Oh yeah, I forgot about the witty remarks, they don't answer the question, but often add a strange twist to it.

So hard to pick a best answer!

    I tend to give thumbs down for answers that are insulting, stupid, false, or non-responsive.

    For example I thumbs downed an answer where a person simply said "Christians are nutters".

    Thats not an answer, it adds nothing intelligent to the discussion, it's just ignorant bigotry.

    I'm pretty liberal with my thumbs in either direction. I thumb up answers I like, answers that make an original point, answers that are funny or witty, and answers that actually answer the question. I thumb down answers which are personally insulting, too long to read, copy and paste, or don't even try to answer the question.

    I don't give thumbs down at all. I sometimes give thumbs up to thoughtful answers. Thumbs down are a problem on this forum. A lot of perfectly good answers get thumbs down for reasons of bigotry and intolerance.

    When I give thumbs up,I give it to some one because they seem smart and christian in what they are saying.And some people actually defend Jesus Christ so I thumb them up.I thumbs down when people make fun of God and say He does not exist,and a whole lot of other stuff like that.I also thumbs down textted answers and some answers that are just to long.(long as in you could write a novel with what they were saying)

    If I agree with the answer, I usually give it a thumbs up. If I disagree with the answer, I leave it be. If the answer is not relevant to the question, I will give it a thumbs down.

    I give thumbs up to new perspectives that are correct. I never give thumbs down to anything that opposes my views, but I do to spam and extensive bible verses that give absolutely nothing.

    i put thumbs down on people who sound stupid or people who believe that god can be known through any of these religions that exist today or those who quote holy books as fact and...

    pretty much if you're a theist...i'll thumbs you down
