A lack of understanding has caused much confusion over the use of tongues in the church.Speaking in tongues(speaking in a language that the one who is speaking does not know and can't understand)is a work of the Spirit designed to get the attention of unbelievers.1st Corinthians 14:22"Wherefore tongues are for a sign, not to them that believe, but to them that believe not."To understand the use of tongues in the church, one must distinguish properly between the 3 distinct uses that the Bible identifies.

1.the initial evidence of receiving the Holy Ghost

    2.personal edification

3.a special message from the Lord requiring interpretation

Read the book of Acts.Acts 2:37 asks the question,"Men and brethren, what must we do?"Verse 38"Then Peter said unto them, repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost."

It doesn't just happen, you have to seek it.(the Holy Ghost)Anyone can receive it if they want it.Acts 2:39"For the promise is unto you and your children and to those afar off.Even as many as the Lord our God shall call."

    Hope this helps!

Purpose of speaking the true tongue is in Mark 13. 11. Not to allow the Holy Spirit to speak through you at this time is the unforgivable sin. Don't Premeditate what you say at that time just let the Holy Spirit speak. God's elect can most certainly do it. Everyone that hears the true tongue spoken can understabd it. Not like the gibberish you hear today.

I read the Bible and it is clear that the miracle of tongues was that each person in the crowd heard the disciples message- in their own language.

This to me means it was not holy gibberish- but a known language!!!

It was a gift of speaking another language without studying or learning it- to enable the disciples in their job of going out and preaching to the whole world.

I cringe in horror when some churches say one isn't filled with the Spirit if they have not tongues. Because tongues is only ONE of the gifts, and not everyone will have tongues.

I personally have not met anyone with what I consider the true gift of tongues. They just speak nonsense- no other language.

  • Not just any one can speak in tongues unless the Spirit gives them utterance. The purpose is to speak to God in ways you know not.

Only those that are filled with His Spirit can speak/pray in the Spirit

Don't be fooled by the false doctrine that someone else can teach you to speak (repeat after me) and the more you practise the better you will get. That is Blasphemy against the Holy Ghost; the unpardonable sin.

I believe God nonetheless indicates humans matters (prophesy) and I believe there are humans who talk in tongues (languages) even as beneath the impact of the Holy Spirit. The drawback I have together with your mom, from what you let us know, is that she brags approximately those matters. Pride is a sin. And she sounds prideful or potentially she demands concentration, I have no idea. If she is studying your diary and looking you in church (while she must be concentrating on worshiping God) then she may be fallacious and manipulative. Speaking in tongues and prophesy/visions had been one of the most presents of the Spirit Jesus promised we might have. Unfortunately, those matters were misused through humans till they have got a terrible connotation for such a lot humans. But there are the ones with natural causes and hearts almost God who nonetheless have those presents!! Thank God for that....((Hugs))

Personally I believe it is on a very very very rare occasion. No actually honestly I think that stopped like 2000 yrs ago (no I have no proof, it's just "my belief").

But some religions use it as a weekly ritual. Reason I know, my mom went to a Holy Roller church and I went with her. About 4 or 5 of them started speaking in "tongues". A couple of the girls fell to the floor and looked like they went convulsion.

Needless to say I had to get up and go. I convinced my mom to switch churches after that.

Speaking in Tongues is a gift from The Holy Spirit. Tongues is a praise language to God and whatever you say in Tongues is acceptable by God. Anyone who has accepted God can ask in prayer for His gift of tongues, also you can ask for the gift of interpretation of tongues.

it is a symbolism of the reversal of the curse of the tower of babel, when the arrogance of humankind led them to speaking in different languages thus unable to understand each others, on the opposite of Pentecost where the apostles spoke a tongue understood by every one, as a symbolism of the union of mankind after the sacrifice and resurrection of JESUS

Yes, I speak in tongues, and it is the best gift that God gave me...it makes your spirit strong and builds you up to where you can handle any attack from the enemy...

Also when you pray in tongues for people, the devil has no clue what you are talking about and it goes directly to God ...without him being able to stop it...

God reveals mysteries, things that you cannot possibly know while you speak in tongues...there are so many things

As evidenced in the Acts account it was for mass testimony of the good news to a large diverse audience.

As evidenced in most Churches today it is a self indulgent practice at best and all but worthless.
