Question about RAM memory. reporting by dell 755?

I had 2gb RAM in my 755 and I just put in a 2 gb stick. The system now states I have 3.23 gb instead of the 4 I expected to see. I am running XP. Anyone know the reason, is it a limitation of XP?

thanks

Some system memory is used for onboard devices such as video, ethernet, PCI devices. Windows is reporting how much memory is available for use and not the total memory installed. You could try adding the /PAE switch to the boot ini file. /PAE is really for 32bit Windows to access more than 4G of memory, but I have seen it show the total amount of memory installed instead of the usable amount. In any case, every thing is working as designed, don't worry about it.

Windows XP 32bit will use 4 GB of ram but you will only see 3.23 because the other .77 GB is being used as Kernel memory.

xp 32 bit operating system can only use up to 3.2gb of ram, you need to get windows xp 64 bit edition, which will be able to use the full 4 gb of ram

the above answers are correct, any 32 bit OS recognizes 3GB unless manually allocated.

    Source(s): got 8GB running Win Vista X64

it is a limitation of all 32-bit operating systems not being able to use more than 3.5gb.
