Adoptee's Rights is a Civil Rights question. I can order a birth certificate from the State, but the Adoptee cannot unless he
goes through all the Red Tape and spend lots of money which
most of the time they cannot afford. The laws differ in each state.
I believe that when a child is 18 he is old enough to get his birth
certificate without all the hassle. What is so awful is that I pay 10
or 12 dollars for my birth certificate and he has to spend hundreds
which is not fair.
Some say well the birth parents do not want to have contact with the child they gave up for whatever reason. That is their right but should
have no bearing on the Adoptees Rights to Know. But he or she
should be able to know who their parents are and why he or she
was adopted. That is a Basic American Civil Right.

Source(s): Working with Adoptees who are trying to locate their families and all the laws which prevent them from locating their Birthmom, birthfather or other siblings. Laws made by people who are not compassionate or merciful in treathing other humans with love and tender lovingkindness. Learning of the heartache they have gone through in the search for their birthmom or birthfather and/or other siblings.. It is very sad. WE need to get our lawmakers to understand what is going on. - Shelly17Lv 51 decade ago
Excellent. Considering the disaster in South Dakota -- supposedly due to a pro-life adoptee legislator who fear-mongered at the last minute using the lie that open records increase abortion rates (when the evidence points to the exact opposite) -- the truth about open records needs to be spread.
Under the principles of equality under the law, adoptees should have the full right to their birth records, the same as all other persons do.
Ideally:
1) There should be no age discrimination preventing adoptees of *any* age from obtaining this information. In several other nations, records are *never* sealed and you don't see damage to children because of it.
2) Records should never be faked with the originals sealed up to begin with. Adoptive parents don't need to "hold their adoptees captive" by ensuring they can't find their natural parents ever again by searching
3) Both parties should have equal access to records. Thus, adoptees can obtain the name of their natural parents -- and those parents who were forced to surrender babies to adoption can obtain the adoptive name of their lost child. Why can't it work in the U.S. the same as in some provinces in Canada? Why can't we acknowledge that mothers who were forced to surrender babies they wanted and loved need to find out if that child is safe or even alive?
Anyway, best of luck to this adoptee rights demonstration. You have my full support.
