    Fats & Sweets

    ~The tip of the Food Guide Pyramid contains the fats and sweets. These foods include salad

    dressing, cream, butter, margarine, sugar, candy, soda pop, sweet desserts, and some snack and

    fast foods. These foods provide calories but not many vitamins and minerals. They can be used

    in moderation to add variety to your diet once you have chosen foods from the other food groups.

    Some pregnant women may need foods that are high in fat or calories to improve the growth

    of their baby.

    Alcohol, Drugs, && Smoking;

    ~Alcohol, drugs, and cigarette smoke all pass into your baby’s

    body and can be very dangerous. They can cause the baby to be

    born too early, too small, and with health problems.

    ~No amount of alcohol or street drugs is safe. Alcohol and drugs

    can cause your baby to have birth defects.

    ~Even common medicines can harm your baby. Don’t take aspirin, laxatives, antacids,

    cold medicines, or vitamins other than prenatal ones unless recommended by your doctor.

    ~Remember, the sooner you quit smoking, drinking, or taking drugs, the more likely

    you will have a healthy baby. Ask your health care provider for help.

    Herbal Medicines;

    ~Check with your doctor before taking any herbal remedies or

    medicines. Also, let your doctor know if you are taking any

    herbal remedies or medicines. Some may be harmful!

    Extra Information;

    ~A small amount of caffeine is probably okay, however, too much

    may cause health problems. Caffeine is found in coffee, some soda

    pop, tea, and chocolate. It is best to drink no more than 12-oz. of

    coffee a day. Instead drink more water, milk, and juice

    ~Most major brands of herbal teas are probably okay to drink during

    pregnancy, however, it’s best to limit herb tea to two 8-oz. servings

    a day. Some herbs can be harmful. Avoid teas that contain

    lobelia, sassafras, coltsfoot, comfrey and pennyroyal

    ~You need extra fluids when you are pregnant. Drink 6-8 glasses of

    liquid a day. Choose water, milk, juice, soup, and other non-alcoholic

    and non-caffeinated drinks. It is good to drink some plain water every day.

    Foods to be careful about;

    ~Artificial Sweeteners

    These artificial sweeteners are generally considered safe to use during pregnancy:

    Aspartame (Equal) Acesulfame potassium (Sunett)

    Saccharin (Sweet ‘N Low) Sucralose (Splenda)

    Use only moderate amounts of these during pregnancy and breastfeeding

    ~Fish

    Some fish are high in mercury, which can damage the unborn baby’s nervous

    system. It is best to not eat these fish while you are pregnant:

    Shark King mackerel

    Swordfish Tilefish

    You may eat up to 12 ounces

    Certain fishes (def not sushi!), shellfish too. Some fishes have higher mercury counts than others. Although a midwife at my doctor's office told me all fish is ok in moderation (2 servings a wk). Not sure if I totally believe that one. No fake sugars so watch those flavored waters if you like them-most are sweetened with the bad sugars. You can have honey. Honey shouldn't be given to children under 2 I believe but it's ok for pregnant women. I put it in my tea a lot. My girl is totally healthy. Check all foods you buy to make sure abt the sugars. Also, you can only have pasteurized cheeses (cannot have brie or feta or I believe even blue cheeses). Lunch meat isn't good to eat either although I've had it on occasion. Doc said it was fine. The less caffeine the better. Drink lots of water! Congrats and good luck!

    You can pretty much eat everything you ate before becoming pregnant, other than alcohol of course. Caffeine is okay in moderate amounts [think one cup of coffee or one soda a day], as is cooked fish [also in moderate amounts.] Make sure the meat you eat is not raw, any eggs or dairy products are pasteurized and don't spend your time constantly worrying about every little thing you put in your mouth. Talk to your doctor about what he/she feels you shouldn't have. As long as you're sticking to healthy foods [fruit, veggies, whole grains, etc.] you should be good.

    P.S. And don't listen to the girl that said caffeine causes miscarriages. Just don't go drinking three triple grande espresso's a day.

    The only things I would really worry about is making sure you don't eat raw fish like sushi and don't eat too much fish because of mercury. I've also heard that you should avoid deli meats but I'm not too sure about that. The buffale chicken thing I've never heard and I dont know why it would be a problem. I think as long as you aren't smoking, doing drugs, drinking alcohol and try and stay healthy in general you'll be fine! Good luck!

    You should get what to expect when you're expecting. It helps weed out all the stuff you should and shouldn't eat.

    Chicken is fine as long as its cooked well of course

    Caffiene free coke isnt good, but the aspartame that it is sweetened with isn't supposed to be good for you or baby

    No caffeine, or really reduced

    Eat lots of fresh fruit, vegetables, whole grains, protein (not too much red meat), fibre rich foods, dairy products. Take your prenatal vitamins.

    Don't eat too much fatty or sugary foods.

    I read that things sweetened with sucralose is a better choice over aspartame.

    Hope that helps and congrats!!

    I think the buffalo chicken is not true. Chicken is good for you to eat while you are pregnant because of all the protein in it. As far as the caffeine goes, my doc told me not to have it in the first trimester because of the risk of miscarriage. However, because of your increased blood flow in the second trimester, he recommended drinking la ittle caffeine! He said to drink it when i felt lightheaded or dizzy. It is fine in moderation!

    do not eat:

    Hot dogs or sliced deli meat

    any undercooked meat

    any unpasteurized or soft cheese (feta, blue, ect)

    any game (deer, rabit, ect)

    raw eggs- no cookie dough!

    raw shellfish

    Here is a good website that explains why you cannot eat the things that i just listed.

    http://www.americanpregnancy.org/pregnancyhealth/f...

    Also-- just search Yahoo or Google for "foods to avoid during pregnancy" and you will get many lists of things to stay away from.

    I've never heard of the buffalo chicken one, but I know for a fact that you should not drink caffienated drinks because it will go through to the baby and can reduce blood flow to the placenta. It can also cause miscarriage.

    There are many healthy fruits and vegetables. Fresh vegetables like broccoli and kale contain calcium and are packed with fiber.
