experienced martial artists what do you consider as your greatest talent?
a question that popped in my mind durig practice yesterday. what talent or quality do you consider to be your greatest benefit during practice or in a real live situation. some people are born with extreme quick reflexes or are from birth very strong. personally I would have to say that my greatest benefit is my creativity. during my years i've amazed many people with my ability to come up with some of the craziest combinations or come up with near to impossible techniques and often surprising my opponent with my reaction. Seeing how important the element of surprise is I would consider that my greatest advantage. so what's yours

My flexibility, mental flexibility that is. Since I began my training I've been able to see a technique and memorize it for use later on. I also see other applications or variations to the techniques allowing me to surprise more than a few sparring and grappling opponents. This is probably similar to pugpaws' ability to analyze.
For me this has actually caused trouble a couple times. Namely for techniques that appear more complex than they are. A prime example is a triple jumping front kick, we never use it but it's included as a requirement. I saw the technique and decided that I had to rechamber my first kicking leg before kicking out again for the third. My analysis was incorrect but I was too focused on accomplishing what I thought I had to do to step back and re-evaluate.
On the drive home I deduced that the rechambering wasn't done, it just looked like it because the body was still traveling forward in the air over the first kicking leg. Next class I simply gave myself a little more forward momentum instead of vertical height and nailed it. This was a couple days behind my training partners who didn't think about the technique and just ran at it and nailed it.
There's a lot to be said for "don't think, just do" in martial arts but I still prefer trying to understand the hows and whys behind what I'm doing.

my athleticism and my flexibility. I started training with full grown adults at the age of 14 and i would never ran out of energy ever even during sparring (muay thai/tkd/bjj). now i am a little older and i am stronger than almost everyone i train with except the heavy weights but i am also every fast. i am also able to kick higher really fast thanks to my flexibility and pull off things in bjj that requires a lot of flexibility. You can say i am a natural athlete but i consider my greatest talent to be my work ethic. i train 2 to 3 times a day and that is not counting the conditioning

I see myself as having several talents related to the martial arts:
1) The ability to analyze any fighting style I see
2) The ability to adapt to what is needed in any situation
3) The ability to constantly learn from others and my own mistakes
There are others, but these just came to mind at the moment.

I have a few,
1. My awareness - being aware is the single most important talent to have in a real life situation
2. My open mind. I'm not restricted by any thoughts of what art or style is the best. I'm able to train for years in one art and see the benefits of others.
3. A wicked left hook.

While I am not experienced in MA, I have a long history of fighting and I would consider my greatest talent would have to be my creativity in subbmissions or flexability (watch Royce Gracie's kidney kicks from the ground in UFC 1. I don't know if I can still do it but I used to be able to kick the person in the head and shoulders).

Hrm... My willingness to do something the other guy isn't. Jump from a second story patio to get away, for instance. It's not about the fight for me. It's about getting home to my family.

Mine is probably being able to stay calm and think clearly no matter what the situation is.
I'm also working on my reflex where I commit mass homicide when startled.
