what food items do you buy for when you have a late night and your husband has to make supper?

Presuming that your husband is as helpless as mine in the kitchen.

Update:

he can't make the fajita kits (or so he claims) I tried that--the man is so lazy. I'll come home and there will be take out wrappers and bags and he'll complain that we have no food (with packed fridge, freezer and cupboards). He drives me crazy sometimes.

Update 2:

sorry about the 'sexist' wording, guy. I bet you're an excellent cook.

Update 3:

I Love all of your ideas, I left the screen up when I went to the store. I think my husband read it, when I came back he was attempting to make the fajitas. He said, "you came back just in time, I tried to do it in the microwave but I think I'd rather if you did it on the stove"

So I encouraged him to finish, maybe this will encourage him to make other things.

Haha I know what you mean!

Buy simple things, sandwiches, mac and cheese, salad, canned soups, frozen anything. The less work he has to do the better!

My husband is pretty helpless too. I went to FL with our daughter for 6 days to visit my family, and I made a huge batch of Shepherd's pie before we left..and I bought him 3 dinner kits (the frozen kind that you just have to put in a pan with a little water, cover and it's done). He was very greatful.

I would suggest, as others have, the frozen entree's that you just have to heat up on the stove, or in the oven. Make sure you tell him that just because it says you can use a microwave, doesn't mean you should. Most of those things taste yucky out of the mic...(at least that's what i've found)

The worst part about my husband is that when I met him, he lived with 3 other guys, and he was the cooker and cleaner of the bunch. He loved to cook, and the apartment was spotless! Now, god forbid he stops playing video games for two seconds to take out the trash..and forget cooking..everything tastes weird, or is burnt. He claims it's my *fault* for spoiling him...

    good luck!

The frozen family size dinners come in handy for times such as these, Stouffer's makes good lasagna and chicken enchiladas. There are also frozen fajita kits (by Tyson). Barring that, there are pizza coupons!

I know what you mean and find it is easier to prepare it in advance myself, and leave instructions, even then it it is either burnt, or undercooked.

It would appear to me no meal is idiot proof.

We have canned stews that just need to be nuked, one can per serving.

Leave out potatoes and carrots to peel, he will have no idea of quantities most likely and tell him to chop the potatoes into chunks for mashing and to cut the carrots into 40mm pieces and quarter.

Give him the cooking times and the time you will be home and hope for the best.

    Shredded Chicken Sandwiches:

Buy a can of shredded chicken, a can of cream of chicken soup, and bread crumbs. In a crock pot have him add the chicken, the soup, and some of the bread crumbs. That's all. You can fix it in the morning and cook on low all day, or later in the day and cook for not so long. The more you make, the longer you can eat on it...and its really good heated up.

I am a Man so don't have a husband. I do almost all of the cooking but my wife is not a good cook, she could burn water if given the chance.

I buy frozen foods of good quality like Stouffer's Lasagna and Enchilada's. Sometimes, I premake stuff and she finishes it by placing it in the oven for us.

All answers seems good. I'm not a good cook. Mike is an excellent cook. He can through anything together and it makes my mouth water. I would say spagehtti, caned soup, Hamburgers and chips. Sandwhiches and salads. Good luck and happy eating.

That's scary. If it were me, I'd have to cook on the weekend & make it as easy as possible for my husband. There's no telling what he'd put in the pot. He thinks it's cool catching flies with his bare hands. I cook on the weekends anyway like chicken or tuna salad, pasta salad, vegetables & cornbread or grill extra hamburger patties. I like to have a pot of spaghetti, jambalaya, soup, chili, beans or something like that in the frig to heat up.

Steaks or chops are simple to cook, even if on the BBQ/Grill.

Anyone can boil or bake potatoes, & any frozen veggies.

Pasta with bottled sauce is hard to mess up.

Or you could make a lasagna or casserole, that just has to be heated.
