Would you shoot COYDOGS?
If you thought a coydog killed your cat what would you do? My cat, Mr. Alex (age 11) lives one mile from the road in the western mountains of Maine woods. We always made sure he was in before dark and wouldn't let him outside until daylight broke. He disappeared. He has been gone since last Sunday. The only possible reason that I can think of is that coydogs got him or else a fox or a fisher. I want to get a gun and shoot all of them. What would you do?

My cat was mauled twice last year by one of the local coyotes or foxes. I did not go hunting for them because of the simple fact that they were doing what coyotes and foxes do; hunt for food to feed their families.
It's not their fault that they like cat meat and it certainly is not their fault the cat was there when they went cruising through. And if they patrolled around my house more often I wouldn't need the cat in the first place because foxes and coyotes eat mice. And that's why we have cats; to kill the mice that the coyotes miss.
We don't go around killing animals indiscriminately here. Every animal has it's distinct purpose and those that kill mice are encouraged, not shot. I live in the wheat belt and we have no use for mice. And if we lose one cat there are plenty more to take its place. The city dwellers drop them off here by the dozens every year along with their dogs. It's the dogs we hunt here; not the wildlife.

Coydogs are not normally protected, considered varmits, nor do they usually survive a winter that is very cold, as they would be in Maine.
A number of predators could be the culprit, so killing a coydog to satisfy your anger over the loss of Alex may not be as satisfying as you might think now.

No good cat owner lets their pet cat outside. Working cats go out to kill mice. But not if you're very attatched to them. Sure he "loves it." And sure it's "awesome" he gets to roam outside like a real wild kitty. But in reality, you are no better than the people who walk their dog off leash near a road and sue when he's hit... It's terrible that you lost your cat to whatever causes, and im sorry for your loss... but you knew the risk. And you took it anyways. It's rather irresponsible to assume he will always be fine. And it's a shame you even own a gun if that's the way you use it. Rescue a kitten from the pound for Christmas and learn from your mistakes. Save a life in Mr. Alex's memory.

Accept the fact that nature just happened. You let your cat out unsupervised and a predator caught him. It sucks but it's not the coyote's fault, he was only doing what came natural. You're to blame for letting a pet loose.
I have a couple feral cats and the coyotes bug them from time to time. I've done my best to keep the coyotes away and give the ferals a couple safe places to go. I even stand out there and bang pans together to scare them off when I know they're getting up to the house. I've had them right on my doorstep before.

The one to blame is you. You knew of the dangers outside and yet you let your cat outside. Don't blame an animal or seek revenge, they are doing what comes natural.
Nobody's fault but yours.
