Cigarette Lighter drained battery flat?

I have a 10 year old Toyota Starlet. The cigarette lighter has never been used.

1 week ago I bought a SAT NAV, and briefly plugged it into the lighter to see if it worked.

It was only plugged in for 2 minutes and then unplugged again.

Since then my car battery has drained down to flat. It was a fairly new battery.

Would this indicate that there is an electrical fault somewhere, and that by plugging into the lighter I have triggered some sort of connection that continues to drain the battery even though the SAT NAV is not now plugged in.

I appreciate any thoughts you may have on this. Thank you.

If plugging the NAV in damaged the lighter somehow, it could create a condition similar to the lighter being on, not a 'short' but a connection that might be drawing amps.

I've damaged a lighter receptacle before plugging an accy. into it.

The timing is too close to be a coinc.

This should not be related. If the cigarette lighter socket were shorted, then the fuse would blow, and it would stop drawing power.

I would assume that something else was also on, for whatever reason. I doubt that plugging in the navigation unit had anything to do with it, just a coincidence :(

you did not say if you had your vehicle running as you used the compressor,,if the vehicle was not running then you may have drained it enough so it will not start,,with your car not running as you used your compressor it drew from the battery only,,,whereas if it was running it would have drawn off the alternator,,,if the battery is fairly new a charge should do the trick (jump start then let run for approx. 20 min) otherwise you may need to replace the battery if its got some age on it.

  • the chances of any thing plugged into the cigarette lighter draining the batter yin that short a period of time is none. the fuse for that outlet is usually about a 10 amp fuse. with the little information that you gave, i cannot answer your question.

It is unlikely plugging that unit in for a short time had anything to do with draining the batt. Coincidence in my opinion.

Something other than the lighter drained your battery. Check for something staying on like dome light, under hood light, trunk light, glove box light, brake lights etc.

I would remove the fuse for the lighter to see if the problem goes away. If it does then your suspicion is confirmed. If not, it is a coincidence and you will need to investigate further.
