Flood in North Dakota, many volunteers.?

http://www.cnn.com/2009/US/weather/03/24/north.dak...

I find it interesting that there are so many volunteers 10,000+ that they had to turn them away. Quite a different picture than what we saw in Louisiana, a bunch of losers with their hands held out.

Update:

I don't know if you have ever been on that side of ND but it is flat as a pancake, you would have to move quite a long ways away. The draw to that side of the state is the fertile land for farming. It is the best anywhere in the midwest.

Update 2:

Good point Dakotalover. North dakota is a swamp in the spring but that explains why it is so nice and green later in the summer.

    So what's your question?

There's that may volunteers because that's just the way people in North Dakota are, we look out for eachother. We're happy to help our friends and neighbors in times of need.

As i'm sitting here and my arms are so sore that it's even hard to wash my hair, i'm still glad that I went out sandbagging, I made a difference.

Picking up and moving a city a few miles away....yeah easier said than done.

I'll tell you what has me shaking my head: I remember the flooding they had in North Dakota in 1997, and I do not understand why people continue to live in an active floodplain!!!!! Why don't people move away from the river and live somewhere nearby but far enough away to not be affected? North Dakota has lots and lots of land. Instead of building levees and flood-control basins and things like that, why don't people just move a few miles away to higher ground? Wouldn't that make more sense than dealing with catastrophic floods every few years???

Spring flooding happens out here, but it's not just rivers, it's overland flooding too. Much depends on the winter, the amount of snow, and the way it melts as the temps warm up.
