How to locate an old car?

My father restored a 1940 Chevy into a show winner. he died in 1983, when I was 11 years old, and my mother sold the car. Can anyone tell me where to go to find it. I have already tried the title office, but their records do not go that far back. Same with the BMV.

When your mother sold the car, that was the end of it. There is no where you can go to find where the car is now since the drivers privacy protection act protects the current owner from having his private information released.

    18 U.S.C. § 2721 et. seq.

Even if you had the VIN finding it would be like impossible. After 25 years it's a good chance the car isn't even on the road anymore.

I guess you coudsl try to contact Vintage Car Clubs but you are really looking for the proverbial needle in a haystack.
