How well informed are you in regard to middle east news? Does the media filter news due to bias?

I've had a discussion with a friend about the way the media reports the middle east conflict, one side claiming that they are extremely biased in favor of the Palestinians and the other saying it's not that bad.

Every bad move Israel does is reported all over the media. However, I have 4 newsbits for you from the Israeli side, my question is - How many of them have you heard about on the news?

1. Israel has been removing dozens of checkpoints in the West Bank over the past few months to allow the Palestinians more freedom of movement, by not stopping them for security purposes in those checkpoints which got removed. This peaceful gesture allowed what happened in points 2, 3 and 4.

2. two weeks ago - a group of Palestinians stopped along the side of the road and faked a car malfunction. When 2 Israeli policemen stopped to help them, they shot the police officers in the head and escaped.

3. 10 days ago, a palestinian put a car wired with explosives inside a busy mall. Luckily, the police managed to circumvent this terrorist attack.

4. Today, a Palestinian entered a Jewish city and began hitting the citizens with an axe. Among the injured, there is a 7 year old who was hit in the head and a 13 year old killed.

My question is - Have you actually heard of all 4 events on the news? Was it covered as sufficiently as events happening in Gaza/West Bank get covered? And what do you think of it all?

Update:

Bona C - Israel withdrew and removed all settlements in Gaza in 2005, that only led to more attacks on Israel from Gaza. Israel removed checkpoints in the West Bank and stopped building settlements and it led to these terrorist attacks. Do you honestly think that removing even more settlements/forces would be the solution even though it was already done time and time again and only worsened the Palestinians' attacks on Israel?

I don't know about that, but I have something else:

    http://www.aljazeera.net/NR/exeres/12C4F990-6F25-4...

There are comments on this in Arabic. My friend translated them for me, and let's look at some of them.

-What are these sensitive feelings, Rami. You're sad for the little Israeli who will kill you when he grows up. Where were your feelings when they killed the children in Gaza and they die everyday, where was your voice when those children were killed, or are you in the West ?

Oh Allah narrow down his grave, make it a pit in hell and let him rise again with his loved ones (Westerns).

-Thank you, Axe hero ! you're better than the others, Allah shall grant you victory.

-Yes, the brave Mujahed ! {Kill them wherever you find them}(from the quran)

-Allah bless you. I wish we could follow you (repeating the crime).

Allah may put this in your good deeds. And every day we want something like this. "Kill them all, and leave none."

    ----------------

    Sad ... isn't it ?

Even though I've heard most of them, I still cannot understand the connection between the Gaza with thousands dead and injured, with couple of people here and there, how exactly do you compare something which affected 1.5 million people, air strikes, phosphorate mass execution.

Anyway even the Gaza wasn't covered in this country anyway especially as journalists were not allowed access and eventually were accompanying IDF which means they were very much controlled by Israel.

If you want to compare, why don't you compare the holocaust with Gaza, that's more comparable, how do you think people felt attending holocaust memorial day for people who all over Xmas and New Year were recreating the holocaust, they didn't show any mercy.

Why in February when Israel showed all it's power and might needed to come to London for Anti semite conference to protect themselves from any accusations, making everyone wonder who the real victim is and the hypocracy of it all, are we meant to protect one kind of semite at the expense of the other??

You are great at creating propaganda when it suit you, but you can't handle any criticism as if we're all bunch of idiots who're meant to be fed your bullshit and lies, you manipulate the media when it suit you and cry victim when it's you who's doing the hammering, what happened in Gaza, west bank and all the massacres that Israel have created long before I was even born are criminals and thankfully at last the world is waking up to the reality of the situation.

Why don't you answer this, why are the Israeli's so against palestinians having any human rights? being equal just like any other place on this planet?? 3,4 checkpoints are not close enough, all checkpoints should be dismantled, all accesses opened, water, electricity restored, and all bulldozing homes stopped, children back to school not detained, no air raids, no cluster bombs and phosphorates, then you might be able to look the world in the eye.

I am always seeking the real news, and have heard of many of the issues you presented.

However, it would not matter if Israel submitted all their children, women, and young men to a public beheading. They would not and never will be happy until Israel ceases to exist!

no, i have not heard of these four events in the news,

as it is, i live in india, and the knowledge about current events concerning the middle east is acquired only through the web, that too because i;m interested in knowing about it

I am relatively well informed about the Middle East but how well informed depends upon my energy in obtaining information from sources other than our US media. US media is strongly pro-Israel. I have to seek out international sources of information to keep informed.

The information you wrote about was probably available but did not capture my interest or was not available.

We have so very many things going on in the world that are important to us. It is very difficult to stay current on news.

Now, about your list of incidents, a similar list with different particulars could be drawn up regarding actions taken against innocent Palestinians.

Until Israel takes action to conform to International Law, such as the rule against settlements in land acquired as the result of war, the conflict will continue. I anticipate more and more balance in the US response and a distancing from the automatic support of Israel unless Israel does conform to International Law.

No I had not heard of these incidents and they do not surprise me. Nor does the typical media silence.
