Italian food or French food? Which is really the best?

The Italians claim that just about everything in Italy is the best in the world including the food, their neighbours to the North disagree!! :) Afterall the international word is "chef" from French.

So who is the best out of these two? Why?

Update:

The chef comment was tongue in cheek...

I love pasta dishes but I am sorry to say I hate pizza and when it comes to primi and secondi I am always left a bit over-tomatoed, feeling bloated but not really stimulated by the flavours of anything I have eaten.....

    Oh definatley french.

italian dishes well, they all seem to be pasta or tomato based food. mainly pasta/pizza

whereas french you def have variety.

although some things am not too keen are i.e snails, frogs etc. but the othe dishes are the best such as beef, fish, vegetarien etc.

    french is very classy food.

    italian is cheap.

i been to loads italian restaurant, and their food is not great. and tend to be cheap in price. (you pay for what you get). i espcially hate it when they use tinned tomato. yuk.

french restaurants, the food is absolutley amazing yet quite costly. but worth it. alot of very classy french restaurant service was amazing. and yes i would pay that extra for delicious food that i will remember and the service

Chef may be a French word. However, whilst all great chefs are men , this does not mean that all men are great chefs.

Personally, I much prefer the simplicity, honesty, and passion of Italian food.

French peasant food can still be like this, but it has been hijacked and over-engineered.

They are both very similar and yet very different their foods tend to be connected to different flavours i.e Italian is (in my opinion at least) connected to tomato - pizza, bolognese etc. - whereas french foods are most connected (although i know there is a wide range of foods) to frogs legs and snails, I'll add a spanner to the works (or maybe a ladle!!) by saying to get the correct balance of both cuisines you should look at swiss food, as it is sandwched beween both and shares similar cultures to both, to answer your question however i reckon they are 2 different cuisines that are about equal.

Regardless of what I really think of the French, they certainly have the best food in the world. Even if you buy a prepeckaged sandwich from a filling station you''re going to get a treat. It's their forte. And boy do they know how to cook steak!

French by far. Italian is delicious but french food is deep intense flavors you can't get any where else.
