School Nurses: How much do school nurses make, is their salary "tax free," what are their benefits like?

Hi!

I am really interested in becoming a school nurse... What is the average starting salary for a school nurse with a BSN and how much can they potentially make over the years (what is their highest earning potential or what are you paid now?)... Also, I read somewhere on a nursing forum something about their salary being tax free in some states... what exactly does this mean? Are they paid ALL of the money they are offered in their yearly salary? I plan on working in either the New England states (like maine, mass, nh, connecticut, upstate NY, or RI) or out the SE coast (virginia, N. Carolina, S. Carolina, or Georgia...). Also, what is their benefits like? Do they get just as good of health insurance, dental, vision as working in a hospital? What about retirement plans, time off, etc.... Also, if anyone knows any good web sites to find school nurse jobs it would be great.

Thanks so much!

salaries, rather obviously, are not tax free. No one's salary in America is tax free, including your pastor's.

NH and FL do not have state income taxes [as five other states also do not] -- and they make up for it by taxing other elements of your life more heavily. [There is no such thing as a free lunch.]

beyond that, you need more info than I can give -- the business is fragmented and benefit policies are set by individual school boards, not on a state or national basis.

Rather obviously, requirements differ by state [to get a license] and possibly by school district. [unless there is a state law controlling the minimum educational and license level required, less intense situations probably do not require a BSN in those states where RN does not require a BSN -- FL is an example of this.]

being a school nurse is a cushy job Im sure. It is not tax free as far as I know. They get good benefits and easy hours. Hard to find an opening because I think when someone gets a school nurse job they dont ever leave it unless they retire.

Call your local nurse's union and they can help you out. with these questions. Nursing is an odd occupation because I personally know nurses that pull in over 100K a year and other nurses that don't have a pot to pee in. My mom is a nurse and she tries to get all of the holiday shifts because it pays 2.5 times your normal wage. So $30/hour on New Years Day is actually $75/hour.

No one's salary is tax free. Where did you get that idea?
