why does R&P not like the Dave Matthews Band?

apparently, they're in the R&P hall of shame, but i'm wondering what they did to deserve that?? they're all great musicians (RIP leroi moore), dave is a hugely original and creative songwriter, they're amazing live....yea a lot of the people who go to dmb concerts dont go for the music, but that doesnt mean their music is bad. i dont get it. can someone please explain this to me?

Update:

layne -- that was their DRIVER's fault. you cant diss a band's music because of something their bus driver did!

Update 2:

darth -- i highly doubt that. just try listening to songs by some of those other hall of shamers. and not that you'd be interested, but the live, acoustic version of ants marching is much better than the studio one.

Update 3:

rckets - no adventure or edge? one of things i love about their music is that it has a worldly feel to it, i can hear african influences, southern us influences, creole influences, etc. and the frat boy image is just a stereotype of the people who go to their concerts, it has nothing to do with their music, and if you think the concerts and music are related in that way, they're not really cuz frat boys go cuz they know there's gonna be pot there. and dave never wanted to be the singer, he wrote songs and wanted other people to sing them, but then people encouraged him to sing them himself. and, like eddie vedder's voice, you have to get accustomed to it in order to fully appreciate it. dont be so quick to write it off! and i dont know too much about the whole bus incident, but whatever happened should have no effect on liking their music.

Update 4:

rckets -- you're not seriously dissing ihop and forrest gump too?! now i know you're just looking to pick a fight :P

shades, adam & mr. pink -- thank you, you would all get best answer if i had an unlimited supply :)

    I love Dave Matthews Band.

Thank you for asking this question because like many of the bands I love, they're not real popular in R&P. It's like this big bugaboo negative vibe here where someone says they don't like them, and everyone jumps on the bandwagon. Or off it as the case may be... and I don't know how to explain it any better, but it's that way with TONS of groups here. Right or wrong, once a group gets that bummer buzz going it's about impossible to reverse it.

At any rate... *I* still adore their music, both live and studio, and I've seen them three times. Will happily go see them again, too.

Maybe I have a little bit of bias cause they where the basically the first band I ever listened too. My dad is a huge Dave Matthews Band fan and he had me listen to them a lot when I was little so maybe it's a sentimental thing that I like them but I actually do agree with you in some of the things you said.

I don't think they're a great band but I do think they take way to much sh*t on here. I think they should be known as an above average band. Not amazing but not horrible like a lot of people say. And I disagree with people who say they flat out suck. I can definitely see why people wouldn't like the band but saying they suck is too far in my opinion.

I can explain it to you in a very fair and straightforward manner.

    1. They make some of the most boring brand of preppy drunken frat boy rock this side of Hootie and the Blowfish. Most (certainly not all) of their fans consist of people who really aren’t fans of rock music that has any sort of adventure or edge to it. In other words, it’s music ready made for the terminally BLAH.

    2. Dave Matthews has a voice that reminds one of a slowly dying animal. How can anyone stand that annoying warble voice?

    3. Layne brings up a fantastic point. Dave is NOT welcome in the city of Chicago. Nobody blamed Dave or the band for the mechanical failings of the bus itself. We do blame Dave for LYING and DENYING that it was in fact his tour bus that dumped fecal matter onto the heads of an unsuspecting public riding on an architectural boat tour. It wasn’t until Dave was confronted with evidence supplied from nearby security cameras that he indeed was the captain of the S.S. E-Coli. Then he had no choice but to own up to the fact. But I’ll never forget the initial lies.

Darth - Nobody craps on my fair city and gets away with it! :-)

Edit - It isn’t about the fact that their fan base consists of the idiot frat boys but rather their music just flat out sucks. And I couldn’t care less about the “International House of Pancakes” influences. I could make a stew with all sorts of delicious ingredients from all over the globe. However, the end result would likely still be an inedible garbage goulash. How could you tell me “don’t be so quick to write (him) off?” I’ve been listening to his crap ever since the early 90’s. Not like I’ve had much of a choice since radio always gravitiates to music which is the least challenging to the masses. But you gotta admit, that bus incident, very shameful! :-)

Dave should’ve listened to his gut and NOT been the lead vocalist. And how rock can one be when you’re a dead ringer for freaking Forrest Gump?

I don't guess the band is bad or I would put them in the "hall of shame" - everyone is free to like what they like, in my opinion. They are personally just not my thing and they are kind of boring to me. I am not crazy about Dave's voice or the band's songs.

Because "Ants Marching" is, without doubt, literally the single most annoying song ever recorded in all Human History. Almost nothing on the face of the Earth can make me "rage"....But it can. I would literally gouge My own ears off with any utensil at hand if I was every confronted with the dire prospect of hearing it again.

Plus I don't think crapping all over Chicago helped with the PR any.

    *Edit*

In My entire 26 long years of listening to Rock Music I have yet to hear a song, any song, even JoBros songs or any of Vedder's howlfests, that can nearly rival Ants Marching for sheer aural torture.....Ever.

And I'd literally rather use a staplegun on My own fingernails, but thanks anyway.

There's just something profoundly obnoxious to me about his voice, the melodies, his lyrics, the sax... Just everything gets on my nerves. Dave Matthews is an immensely talented man, though.

I think the band is talented enough but their music bores me to tears. I only like one song out of the whole menagerie and that came off of Dave Matthews solo album.

The Dave Matthews Band is one of the most stale and uncreative bands I ever heard. I would rather watch that abomination they call a show "The View" than listen to their garbage. not to mention Dave Matthews' voice sounds like a coyote and pig having barn sex

  • Sucky is as sucky does.

Seriously though, they just annoy the crap out me! I don't know why either but they do and always have. I do agree that Matthews is a very original songwriter. Something still just annoys me though and I've never been able to get past it. Peace :)

  • What are you guys talking about?

Dave Matthews is a musical genius! They have a great vibe to them & their music is just so cool. I love how Dave's voice is just so smooth and has that jazz feel to it. I love these guys & they are popular hit on my morning surf playlist :)

Anyways, these guys are tremendous & they really need to be get some respect around here. Very under appreciated in R&P.
