Question about an Ambulance Bill (I can't afford it..)?
About three months ago I suffered a cardiac arrest on the street (in Brooklyn) someone happened to call 911 and an Ambulance (FDNY) came to pick me up and took me to the nearest hospital (< a mile away). About two months had passed, a bill came in the mail for over 1,000 dollars just for the Ambulance ride. I can't afford to pay this bill.. I never even called the Ambulance and when I got to the hospital I was released less than 2 hours after getting some oxygen which they generously billed me $500 for.
I called the FDNY department and they can't do anything, saying I must pay this bill. I can't pay it though. I don't have a car, a hosue under my name, I work for little money and bearly have enough to support myself. This bill ruined my ENTIRE day, week and probably month. I don't think I can do anything to pay it, my question is..
If I don't pay it, what's the worst that can happen?
Also, if I can't pay it now but once I get money (that I can spend on this bill), if I just wait until whenever some time after the deadline to pay, can I pay then? The lady on the phone said I must pay it before the due date..
I have no way of paying this bill at all, not even if I wanted to. I'm worried, if this gets transferred to collections, they will hassle me daily to pay this bill and I will keep saying to them "I just don't have the money.."..
What's the worst that can happen?
Thank you.

I don't think you have much recourse. It's under implied consent that they took you, meaning that if you could have asked for the ambulance, you would have taken it.
The best you can do is be honest, and tell them you can't afford it and say you'll pay on it where you can or ask for a type of payment plan since you don't seem to have insurance.

If you can't afford the $500 ambulance bill, how do you expect to afford a lawyer who will want 4150 - $200 an hour and probably end up charging you for 5 or more hours of work? And, the lawyer is going to want you to make a deposit for a retainer fee (figure $750 to $1,000) upfront. You're better off calling the ambulance company and asking about a discount and if they can set up a payment schedule. Explain your financial circumstances. Do this as soon as possible or the bill will get turned over to a collection agency which will more than likely place the unpaid bill on your credit report

Call the hospital and see if you can work out a payment plan. Explain that you don't have the money and they will work with you.
If you don't pay it it will go into collections and every time you are 30 days late you will lose 20 points on your credit rating. If you have no credit then you will quickly have very bad credit. It takes 7 years to get that **** off your credit rating. You may not have a car or a house now but in the future you will, and you won't be able to get a loan or anything.
Did you know employer's check credit ratings? A bad score can keep you from a job.
Call them again and ask them for some kind of installment plan. If she has nothing then ask for a superior. Don't be rude when you do it, just remain calm and ask them if you can make very small payments ($20 or less a month). I'm sure they will be willing to work with you if you explain that you have very little money. Make sure you tell them you want to pay it, they will be more willing to work with you.

If you have any personal medical insurance (BC/BS, etc.) or Medicare/Medicaid, that should pick up the tab. Otherwise, you can ask the ambulance company to set up some payment schedule--or borrow the money, from family or friend, or a personal loan company. The worst is that they'll sue, win a judgement, and possibly garnish your wages. See if the ambulance company will work with you.

Well, if you have no house, car, or anyhting like that, just how would a collections agency hassle you?
Best bet? go down and actually talk to them. people are alot meaner over the phone usually than in person. ask to see someone higher up the chain once you get there.
did you pay the 500 all ready or do you owe 1500? If you can get them to let you pay in installments, if you put just 28 dollars aside a week then that would pay the bill off in a year. if you cant afford 28 a week you might be living above your means in one expensive city.
either way, best of luck.

You can contact them and see if you can set up a payment plan. I had a $1500 hospital bill and I couldn't pay it at the time and it went on my credit. So def call them and find out your options.

I'VE BEEN IN YOUR SPOT BEFORE, EXCEPT MINE WAS WORSE! I ACTUALLY GOT A RIDE TO THE HOSPITAL FROM MY DAD, BUT THE HOSPITAL DIDNT ACCEPT MY INSURANCE, SO RATHER THAN MY DAD TAKING ME TO THE OTHER HOSPITAL.... I HAD TO GO VIA AMBULANCE BECAUSE OF THE HOSPITAL ALREADY CHECKING ME IN, WHICH STILL MAKES ZERO SENSE....COST ME $1,848.64. IN MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA!!! HAPPENED IN 2008, I HAVE YET TO RECEIVE A STATE TAX RETURN BECAUSE OF THIS, I REFUSE TO PAY!!!

There is no doubt in my mind that they intend to profit from your misfortune. The worst that can happen, I believe, is that it will go on your credit report. The moment you pay one thin dime, they got you and can use that to show you have the means to pay. Pay nothing and you will be better off if you are unable to pay it all.
