30-30 carbine vs. sks carbine?
30-30 lever action or the sks 7.62x39, which one do you think is the better deer and hog gun,and why?
i have both and have used both, when using the 154 gr in the 7.62 or the 150 in the 30-30 they are both in the same ball park.and any advantage the 30-30 has over the 7.62 slips away down range due to the round nose bullets.each has its own advantages over the other in one way or another. i was just wondering what you guys thought

Both would be fine, although I would opt for the 30-30. Generally, the guns that chamber each are very reliable Also, the 7.62 X 39 (SKS ammunition) has a slightly higher muzzle energy than the 30-30 (average of 2050 ft-lbs for the SKS to about 1850 for the 30-30). The SKS, however, has never been an ultra-accurate gun in my experience. It's accurate enough to hit a deer or hog at closer ranges, but in hunting the better your shot placement, the less likely you are to have to trail the animal over a long distance. A buddy of mine had to trail a deer almost a quarter of a mile because he missed the heart by about half an inch. Both will do the job without difficulty, but In my opinion a little more accuracy is worth more than a little more power for times like the one I just mentioned. Drag a deer back a quarter mile ONCE and you'll probably agree with me. Also, last I checked there was still a larger selection of hunting ammunition available for the 30-30 than for the SKS, allowing you to experiment more and find the ammunition that works best for each type of hunting you do.
If you hunt in the woods, another gun I have had wonderful luck with is the Ruger Deerfield .44 Magnum carbine. Because of the ballistics of the bullet I believe it has a slightly shorter range than the SKS or the 30-30, but I use it when I'm woods hunting (you can't see much farther than 100 yards in the woods I hunt in anyway). I've found it to be very well made, reliable and accurate. Just as something else to consider. Good luck!

the m1 carbine is great if you can find ammo. which you can't, so that's stupid. the SKS is accurate, have a handy bayonet, and ammo is abundant. with a bit of work the SKS can take detachable magazines, and a bit more work it can accept AK47 magazines too. Except for lower weight of the M1 carbine there's really no disadvantage of the SKS. its also easier to clean, requires less maintenance, a bit more reliable, and works as a good bat if you're out of ammo. weight wise, you could carry about 20% more ammo with .30 carbine, but that's all you're gonna get, as most stores don't carry .30 carbine, you're gonna have a very hard time getting more ammo. So with the SKS in 7.62x39mm I could probably carry 200 rounds, if I have a 30 carbine it'll be 240 rounds. But the ammo availability issue makes those extra 40 rounds not worth it. I don't think 240 rounds would be enough for me to get out of the city and then enough to survive after that. the less200 rounds, well I'm gonna find more ammo in the city as i fight way thru, and more in the country as that's actually a popular caliber.

Either will do the job....
BUT be aware --- Although the 7.62X39MM cartridge has similar characteristics to the 30/30 the comparison should be made with a better grade of ammunition.... No comparison should be made with that cheap mil-surp / FMJ ammo the SKS typically uses......
If you prefer to use a scope the 30/30 rifle may be a better choice.... I have never been able to nor have my friends been able to keep a scope mount consistently on the money when mounted on an SKS......
For me its a toss-up.... I use the SKS with open sights and keep my shots under 100 yards...... Of course if I got a good deal on a Marlin 30/30 with a scope I surely would use that also.....
Either cartridge is decent to about 125 yards -- Remember both of these cartridges are not long range cartridges.....

When Ruger's ad campaign compared the 7.62x39 with the 30 WCF, they did the hunting world a real disservice, and stretched the truth more than a little. The proper bullet for deer and hogs in the 30-30 is 165 or 170 grains' weight, at around 2150 fps. You just can't get anything like that from your SKS.

The 30-30win would be more accurate then the sks and fires a heavier bullet then the sks, both can kill deer sized game out to 150yds.But the sks ammo is cheaper and it has a better ballistic coefficient the the 30-30win.But i like the 30-30 for hunting.

Either one is a good choice, as long as you use expanding bullets. However, depending upon where you live, you may need that SKS magazine blocked to hold no more than 5 rounds. That's how it is in Michigan, anyway. That's just a point to ponder.

Your 30-30 has the advantage for both deer and hogs. It has more power, using a heavier bullet, and ammunition is available everywhere. You will never regret choosing the 30-30.

While both should work fine, I think the .30-30 lever gun would be the better choice. Its cartridge is more powerful (1800-1900 ft-lbs vs.1400-1500 ft-lbs). Additionally hunting ammunition is more common for the .30-30.
