Child Booster seat/ car wrecks?

My hubby was in a wrecks this morning, our childrens booster seats were in the car. The kids were NOT in the car... are the booster seats ok to use??

I've heard that once they are in a wreck they are no longer good, but does that apply if the child was not in the seat at the time of the wreck?

Update:

Wow! I had no clue the insurance co would replace them.. thanks guys!!

Update 2:

mommytobe03- I am glad you found this question helpful! =D

They say they aren't any good after a wreck. Depending on how sever the wreck was and how much jarring they got, they may still be OK, but when booster seats are available new for $18 at Walmart, it would probably be best just to replace. Car seats even have expiration dates on them. They supposedly "break down" after 5 years or so even if they've never been out of the box.

I have personal experience with this. DH was in an accident. Thankfully the kids were not in the car, but the car seats were, of course. The insurance company paid to replace the car seats. They paid the current retail value on the same brand/model number we had. The insurance adjuster included that in his estimate. I personally would have continued to use the seats if they had not been covered by insurance, but technically, the are deemed no longer safe once in an accident. Make sure you mention it to the adjuster in case they overlook it...they should be covered.

I was about to say that they are ok to use but after reading the other replies i am now worried as i was in a bad crash a xmas and both my daughters were in the car and i continued to use their seats and i am still using them. I had no idea either that the insurance should replace them i am furious nobody told me this actually. Your question has helped me so thank you. I would listen to the other comments saying they are not safe as they seem to make sense. x

No they are no longer considered safe. Contact your insurance company and they should replace them. If not contact your local police department. Our police department where I live got a grant and like 500 car seats to give away to people who need them. So check at your police department if the insurance company won't replace them

personally i wouldnt take the chance with using them any more. like the first person said it is best to let your insurance company know that you are getting new ones for your childrens sakes.

I have heard before that once they have been in a crash they are not safe to use any longer.
