Can surfboards fly in the cabin of an aircraft as a passenger?
I am flying with friends to Costa Rica for a surf trip. This is our fourth trip down. Airline baggage fees for surfboards are getting outrageous... anywhere from $150 to $700 round trip PER BOARD!
Most airlines allow you to purchase a seat for large items... the example they give is a guitar. Can me and my friends buy a "seat" for our surfboards, and carry them on the plane?
The reason I am looking into this is because airlines charge anywhere from $200 to $600 round trip PER surfboard. A round trip ticket is $300, and if we all could pack our boards and throw them in one bulkhead seat, we would be set.. might not be possible though.

Not for a surfboard.
Unlike a guitar, a board is longer, larger, and heavier. In bad weather, it would be more likely to go flying through the cabin causing injury and damage.

I doubt they will let you do that. Just call the airline and see what they say, nobody else can give you a true answer. Also you could pak may be 2 or 3 surfboards together somehow and pay one fee instead for each one separate.

That is a cool idea, but I doubt that the airline will allow it!
Why don't you buy a board in Costa Rica and sell it at the end of your stay. You can rent really good boards there, too.

i think a surfboard is too big. and plus, wouldn't it be more expensive to buy a seat for a surfboard rather than paying the baggage fee?

No, they would have to be stowed away along with the rest of the large luggage that goes underneath the plane. I am pretty sure that they would at least do that for you considering that some people bring rather large items with them such as skies and stuff. It would just be with the rest of the checked stuff that you would have to pick up after you land and pick up your stuff at baggage claim. Just try and make sure if they can try and do something to make sure it won't brake or be damaged during flight.
