Impressive 3 course meal ideas, wheat free/dairy free?

Hiya, My sister is cooking a 3 course meal for 8 adults. She has the main course sorted with duck legs & a homemade plum sauce with fresh veggies.

We need some ideas for impressive starters (preferably not a sit down one) and a nice dessert that can be chilled prior to serving. All have to be dairy free and wheat free and preferably low sugar/gi where possible.

Any ideas? Thanks so much to everyone that answers, I know it's a big ask!!!!

:-)

Update:

I forgot to add, fish is a no-no too, for the starters of course! Love your ideas Dudette, thanks so much, we had explored the jelly thing, but it's just not that show-stopping for this particular do....

Sounds like your sister is going for an Asian Theme in her dinner menu. Here are some ideas:

    1. Asian slaw served in japanese soup spoons

    2. Miso soup with seaweed and tofu

    3. Crispy fried rice balls (filled with mozarella cheese substitute)

    4. Vege wraps in rice paper with a peanut chili dipping sauce

    5. Cubes of english cucumbers sprinkled with kosher salt, red pepper flakes, and drizzled with seasoned rice wine vinegar. Skewer with grape tomatos or serve along side to cubes of hard salame.

    For desserts:

    1. Silken tofu lemon pie squares (use soft tofu, blended with lemon juice, vanilla, honey or sugar, and poured into a wheat free cookie crust or graham cracker crust. Top with whipped cream)

    2. Fresh fruit with a custard sauce made from tofu, vanilla, brown sugar.

3 Chocolate dipped strawberries (you can fine wheat and dairy free chocolate chips at your local health food store or substitute carob chips)

    4. Sorbet (dairy free) drizzled with chambord or your favorite liquour

    5. Mochi balls

RUMAKI is an oldie, but goodie, for an impressive appetizer! You could do canapes, but serve them on slices of jicama or Belgin endive (instead of crackers)

These cookies are about my very favorite cookie - very different in texture to anything else you've ever had! Serve them with a good quality SORBET (no dairy in sorbet- try Hagen Daz lemon or raspberry)

    CHOCOLATE CHEWIES

    2 cups chopped pecans

    3 large egg whites

    2 cups powdered sugar

1/2 c. unsweetened cocoa powder, plus 2 TB cocoa powder

    2 TB. ground pecans

    pinch of salt

    3/4 tsp vanilla

Preheat oven to 325. Line cookie sheet(s) with parchment paper. Toast nuts until fragrant & brown; cool. Beat egg whites well, continuing beating while adding powdered sugar, cocoa powder & salt. Add vanilla; beat 2 min. on high. Fold in toasted pecans. Drop by heaping TB on baking sheet 2" apart. Bake in middle of oven for 15-18 min or until dry on surface but soft in center when pressed (they WILL crack - they're supposed to:). Don't overbake! Cool. Store in airtight container for 3 days ...... makes 18-20 cookies

you could do a fruit jelly and soya ice cream for dessert! which can easily be pre prepared, and you can buy low sugar jelly!

As for starter, that's trickier- you could do mini stuffed potato skins, with things like sausage meat, onion, goats cheese, peppers, etc. or you could do soup such as sweet potato and butternut squash (it's gorgeous- if you want the recipe- e-mail me). I can't relly think of much else, as most things contain milk or wheat!

    anyway hope these things help!

As a starter - Thai chicken cakes are good and can be prepared ahead so that they only need to be panfried (http://www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/1883/thai-chick... but they would probably have to be sit down.

Romaine lettuce with a mixture of bacon cubes, chicken, parmesan & ceasar dressing

    Vietnamese Lettuce cups (http://www.canadianliving.com/food/vietnamese_lett...

    Dessert:

Poached Pears is all I can think of.

For starters I would recommend these crackers with fig tapenade dip:

And for dessert I would recommend these cupcakes with chocolate frosting:

    Or this German chocolate cake:
