Girdle vs. Hockey Pants- Whats the difference? Which do you prefer? Why?

It is all very much personal preference. I prefer hockey pants myself. The new ones are not too bulky and the pads are all curved to fit the body much better then the way they used to be , which was all pads pretty much square. The girdle is much tighter to the body if you like that feeling. I like the protection and fit I get with my pants . Also no danger of forgetting the shell that fits over the girdle that way either.

I have bounced back and forth over the years. I wore the old school cooperalls back in youth hockey, wore a girdle again in beer league much later and I am back to hockey pants now.

I think a top of the line pair of hockey pants offer a bit better protection from getting hit with pucks and for the most part they are comparable from a standpoint of protecting from hits. There are more gaps in the padding of the girdle, pucks always seemed to find the gaps for me.

The advantage to the girdle is that it is generally lighter and a bit less bulky.

Girdles are lighter and provide more mobility in the legs. Pants are heavier, but provide more protection. From what I can tell, defensive defensemen use pants, while forwards and offensive defensemen use girdles mostly. As a defenseman who tries to block as many shots as possible, I prefer the pants.
