Are Republicans only kidding themselves when they say that the "tea parties" were not about political party?
Why do so many Republicans continue to say that Democrats and other party affiliations were in attendance at the "tea parties"? Did someone take a census of political beliefs?
I don't remember seeing any protest signs against Bush or the Republican party, who are equally culpable in our economic mess.
Where were the protesters complaining about the Bush/Paulson give-away to Wall Street?
Where were the protesters complaining about the Republican "pork" in the budget bills they passed when they controlled Congress?
Where were the "Bush Doubled the Debt" signs?
Where were the "Tax Cuts for the Rich = Less $$ for Me" signs?
Why should I believe that this is a "grass-roots" movement of *all* taxpayers?
maudie: If you actually believe you are not "represented", then I feel sorry for you. Maybe you need to take a civics class.
Representation doesn't always mean the guy YOU voted for. You ARE represented, by the democratic vote of the people in your congressional district.
That's our style of government. Get used to it.
Steve M and Big One (and others):
I thought the protest was against out-of-control Government spending?
The previous admininstraion would be number 1 on that list.
By NOT protesting what Bush and the Republicans did, are you giving them a pass?
You do realize that debt is cumulative...so if Bush/Repubs in congress hadn't rung up so much debt during his term, it would be less than it is right now (which is part of the protest, right)?

When the republicans and libertarians come out of the closet to try and be defenders of the middle class against big government after being in majority control for 10 years, I just have to laugh......
and laugh forever.

There were people protesting Bush on all of those issues, but the media was not allowed to air them. And thank you for pointing that out that it was bush and the republicans who doubled the debt, gave tax cuts to the rich and gave the boys on wall street full reign!
And yet who are the republicans blaming? President Obama, who hasn't even been in office for 100 days! All those tea parties were for was so that republicans could get together and complain about Obama as they carried their pro gun signs and whined about taxes!
People complain about taxes all of the time, but what do taxes pay for? Police, Fire Departments, hospitals, public schools, roads, bridges, jails, our court system, prison and programs for the needy.
So let's all stop paying taxes! Now there are problems with that idea. Who will protect us from the criminals who are no longer in jail or prison, because would be no more court systems and attorneys.
Only the rich could afford to go to the schools and hospitals so you would have a lot of illiterate and sick people around. The chances of another plague would be great, only this time no one would be spared!

So now the Republicans feel "disenfranchised"? Give me a break.
Biggest group of whiners I have ever seen...You have the time to attend a dumb tea party? Then you have the time to volunteer for some worthy cause don't you?
Actions like this don't solve anything or help in any way. The Repub displeasure and foot-stomping are well-documented enough as it is. Real action is need to really fix things--not these fake parties intended to further the hate mongering.

Honestly, I don't care what the Republicans want to call it. I do know that there were people with all sorts of political beliefs at the tea party I attended. I held a Fair Tax sign, and didn't approve of Bush's fiscal policy any more than I do that of the current administration. I believe that the movement will grow and, no, I don't believe it's just a Republican thing.

I personally know that the tea parties were heavily attended by the Constitution Party.

A "grass-roots" movement... that's pretty funny.
The people at these tea parties were all there at the behest of Limbaugh, Hannity, and other talk-radio/TV pundits. First, ask yourself what these pundits are making per year and what motivation they would have to motivate their listeners to protest a 3% raise in taxex for the WEALTHY. The people who were actually at the tea parties were just working class people duped into working against their own best interest by rich old propagandists.
Against their own interest: Between my wife and I, were making.... well, we're making well above average, but still under $250K per year. We're getting a tax CUT under Obama. If you're making under $250K and were at the tea parties... you were duped by rich propagandists into doing their bidding against your own best interests. Of course, you won't believe it because you get all your "news" from these propagandists (neat little system they've built for themselves).

The Republicans are doing their best to get back into the good graces of the American people. At this point they will say anything and everything. Taxpayers can protest all they want but it won't do much good.

No, we aren't kidding ourselves. The divide is between mainstream America and the political class. However, more Republicans and independents (and those who don't feel their vote is worth anything to begin with) feel disenfranchised, since Dems are still hoping their guy will 'do good' against all evidence.

And do you HONESTLY think Bush is the king of run away spending? Have you been watching numbers at all? Or have you seen this OMB chart?

and I did protest Bush. I support Ron Paul.

First of all there are a few Democrats who have awakened and realized that they got a much more radical liberal than they had bargained for. There are many who, like you. truly want socialism. so they were not there. Not all democrats think that whatever tax money the govt needs to confiscate is "OK BY ME".
Next is, Why in the H.E. Double Hockey Sticks would you bother protesting against the LAST PRESIDENT?
I think the headband on your avatar is too tight!

well grigg....you should have been to some here in oregon. an a$$load of went, and went armed, hoping for interference from the police and any other officials. would have been the shot heard 'round the world part two. all of us that attended that i knew were equally pi$$ed off at all parties, not just the lib ones. we need a REAL tea party, not just a protest. sure, people hear them, but not one single politician from EITHER side LISTENS to them. it is high time they do
- tacotorchLv 41 decade ago
I think this was a Independent thing, Independents have been working to build momentum, everyone is sick of the entrenched 2 party system and this is part of it.
