What is the best way to explain the death of a pet to a 3 year old?

This morning I found my 3 year old son's pet bird dead. He saw it and thinks that his bird is just sleeping. I believe that he will soon realise that his bird is not sleeping, what is the best way to explain this to him?

we went to the library and got a book, read it, and then buried our hamster....I have 6 kids and this has worked for all of them. Actually it got harder when I had to tell my twin 15 year old boys last year that their dog, who they had since they were born died while they were out of town.....one of the hardest things I have ever had to do...

3years old? Just tell him his bird flew away, to play in the sky, with the other birds. If he says "where?" just point to the next Bird that flies past.

You can't really explain Death to a 3 year old. So don't try. Get him a goldfish instead. (easily replacable)

You should just sit him down and tell him what happen. How animals dont live forever and how his bird died. He as to know about death sooner or later. You never, he may not take it as hard you think.

Make sure that they know the pet isnt coming back. They need to know that the pet died and is somewhere else. If you believe in heaven, that's a good place to send them!
